Negative HPTs, ultrasound confirmed Gestational Sac. Help?

Hi Ladies,

Now this is a bit of a strange one and I’m hoping some of you may be able to give some advice. My husband and I decided to try and conceive for our first time. We started in August. My last period was 8/8/2018 which should make me just over 9 weeks. After many many negative HPTs, I went to my GP when I was 3 weeks late. She refused a blood test and said I would have to wait it out. When I got to over 4 weeks late, I couldn’t wait any longer and booked a private scan. Nothing showed abdominally so I got an internal and the sonographer said there was a gestational sac (empty) but only measuring at 4 weeks and 4 days. She said she wouldnt expect to see anything at this stage as it is so early. Basically I’ve been told to take another test in 2-3 weeks.

Can anyone shed any light as to what may be going on? Does this sound normal? Could I just gave ovulated late hence why the dates don’t add up?

I have read loads about BMI causing false negatives due to HCG levels and I do have a very high BMI.

I'm sorry you're not getting any clear answers, it must be so frustrating for you.
Do you have a report or image from the private scan? I think if you go back to your GP, they may show more interest. If you don't have anything, you could contact the clinic which did the scan and ask them.

I didn’t get images and the report just says very early pregnancy, advised to rescan... that was all. I know I should just wait and try and get a positive but I feel I need to speak to someone to know what is normal and what isn’t. It’s so frustrating. I am now 5 weeks and 1 day but I haven’t taken another test since the day of the scan when I was 4 weeks and 4 days. I feel I’m scared too. I have had twinges and lower back pain and feel very tired. I am not sure if I’m worrying over nothing

Have you done another test now?

It could just be that you ovulated later than usual or skipped an ovulation, both entirely normal, and conceived when the scan suggests. You perhaps got negative HPTs because you weren't pregnant when you did them, your body was just gearing up to ovulate, but you have since become pregnant. I'd do another test now as at only 4+4, you would only have got a positive in the last week or so at most.

Thank you for your response. I done a test on Tuesday morning which was the day of the scan and it was negative x

Also would a HPT show as pregnant if the gestational sac is currently empty?

It's possible the sac isn't empty, just isn't large enough to show anything.

Were you using hormonal contraception before ttc? That can mess with your cycles so your dates could be off, or it could be a miscarriage which hasn't completed yet.

I’ve been off the pill for 18 months. Only time will tell I suppose. I thought I’d be bleeding if it was that.

Still the same but today I have made my first midwife appointment and explained that I still have negative tests but internal ultrasound confirmed pregnancy so they have gave me an appointment for couple weeks time.
