Concerned about what I ate/drank when I was (very early) pregnant

I was on a city break a few weeks ago and at the time didnt know I was pregnant (I would have been just under 3 weeks!) but I’m a bit worried as I ate just about everything under the sun that you are told not to eat (mussels/clams/oysters/cured meats etc) and it was a pretty boozy weekend. Does anyone know if this is likely to have caused any harm? I know it’s so early on but it keeps playing on my mind :( (I’m being super careful now obviously) any advice greatly appreciated!!

I understand your worry, but your situation is SO common. Bear in mind that baby doesn't actually start getting nutrients from you until a few weeks after conception.

I drank, took antibiotics, ate rare steaks and sushi, all before I knew I was pregnant. I'm now almost 19 weeks and baby is so far looking healthy and growing well Smile

I'm sure everything will be fine. The only reason you're not supposed to eat most 'banned' foods is because of the risk of food poisoning (if it was a few weeks ago then you're obviously fine!). Also, I wouldn't worry about the alcohol at that stage either, the embryo gets it's nutrients from the yolk sack before the placenta is ready and so nothing you're taking in is necessarily going to the baby.

I was very worried about this too as I was on my honeymoon and ate what I shouldn’t have and drank everyday for 2 weeks when I was about 3 weeks. I have a very healthy 9 month old now. It’s totally common! The midwife said as long as you stop when you find out then that’s what matters! Take care x

Hi, didn't want to read and run. I suspect the risk of harm is low - I went to a boozy wedding before I knew I was pregnant and DS seems to have no ill effects. I found this article online that might help to set your mind at rest: Binge drinking and pregnancy 5 myths busted

And congratulations on your pregnancy! Smile

I was on a very boozy hen weekend the weekend before I found out I was pregnant with DD1. I also lived abroad in a country famed for its cheeses and cured meats, of which I ate plenty in the early days of pregnancy. She is now a very healthy and bright 5 year old Smile.
It’s very very common!
By the way, most seafood is absolutely fine to eat during pregnancy.

I was extremely drunk 3 days before I found out I was pregnant. I think I would have been around 3/4 weeks. And I did the same with my other two aswell just because I didn't know.
Midwife has always said it's okay like a previous post has said aslong as you stop when you find out it's okay

Its so common, about 4 days before I got my positive I was out binge drinking until 3am, fell over at least 3 times, I felt awful but just had my first scan and everything is looking perfect :) dont worry yourself

I drank a lot of wine and was taking prescription medication for endometriosis pain thinking my period was late and I was pre-loading the painkillers to manage the cramps....I'm only 17 weeks but touchwood all ok in the scans so far

A lot of people do this. We were TTC after two losses last year but we went away for my birthday in February and wanted to have some fun. I definitely drank too much that weekend. Found out I was pregnant a few days later Grin. I’m currently 36 weeks and he’s doing fine.

Some people don’t even find out they’re pregnant until they’re quite far along, they have drank and taken all sorts they shouldn’t have but the baby is fine.

Glad we’re all in the same boat!! I’ve not told anyone yet and have to pretend to drink at my best friends birthday this weekend - any tips to do that haha!!

I have several excuses lined up for the up and coming weeks as we still haven't told anyone.

I'm driving because we are trying to save for a house move so less money we spend the better.
I'm on antibiotics for a UTI.
I've got a meeting early doors the next day.

You can get alcohol free beer cider and wine. I didn't rate the wine it was just like grape juice. But the beer and ciders are really nice.
But I have considered taking the labels off and taking them 😂😂

@Newtoallofthis2019 just to confirm what others have said really! Me and my OH had been out drinking heavily the evening we did our pregnancy test! Will always remember the following morning waking up with that final hangover. I was 5 weeks then. We'd also come back from New York before that where we'd definitely indulged without limits and I would have been 2-3 weeks along without knowing. I'm nearly 18 weeks and all is well. Don't beat yourself up.

Sober October is a good excuse to have this month... works a treat

Newtoallofthis2019 · 10/10/2018 21:27

@lilbear14 thanks for the tips I was thinking about the alcohol free wine or just go to the toilet a few times with my glass of prosecco she’s bound to give me and pour a bit out every time haha 😂

@ballanj thanks so much good to know there’s so many others with the same story as me!

@Newtoallofthis2019 as for drinks, tonic water with ice and a slice can easily pass for a G&T! Cokes or OJs, could always be a vodka and coke, vodka and orange...just don't let anyone taste it!

Lilbear14 · 11/10/2018 07:27

@Newtoallofthis2019 haha yeah good tips from @bellanj that wouldn't work for me as I'm a light weight and people would click quite quickly as to why I wasn't drunk. I don't have long now until my secret will be out though. Kinda like keeping it a secret though, in a weird way.
