10wks 3days, no scan date? No booking in appointment?

So I went to see the community midwife at my GP practice when I was 8wks 5 days pregnant. I assumed that that was my booking in appointment and bloods and everything were going to be done that day and I'd walk away with my green notes. However it was not my 'official' booking in appointment, just a quick chat with the midwife, I got weighed, had my blood pressure checked and got a few leaflets. I was in and out in 15 mins. My midwife asked me which hospital I'd like to have my baby at, she said I'd be having my booking in app and scan at that hospital on the same day. Thing is nearly 2 weeks have gone by, I'm well in to my 10th week of pregnancy and not received any letters? Whilst pregnant with DD (who is almost 3) I'm sure I remember getting an appointment letter well in advance of the scan date? Should I call the hospital or my community midwife to find out what's going on? I don't want to make a pest of myself or seem impatient, but I could do with knowing soon so I can sort childcare for DD and I'd like to arrange with work to book it off as a holiday day, as opposed to rushing back to work after the scan.

I wonder if I've got it wrong and I was supposed to contact the hospital myself to make the appointment? My midwife never specifically said she was going to refer me? I just assumed she would given that's what happened when I was pregnant with DD? Should I just call and find out? And who's best to call, midwife or maternity unit? When did you ladies get your scan date/have your booking in appointment?

Call the hospital to check whether they have received the referral request.

If not, chase it with the midwife.

Hopefully you’ll hear soon!

My booking in was at 8 weeks with the midwife and then I got a letter for the scan within 2 weeks. The only bloods I've had at the hospital were for the trisomy screenings and everything else was done by my midwife at 8 weeks but I guess different areas do things differently. I would call both starting with the midwife as I would imagine it was up to her to refer you.

Arrgh! My midwife is a total nightmare to get hold of, only takes calls for 1 hour of the day! She must be one busy lady. Calling the hospital maternity unit now and it's near impossible to get through. Must be a baby boom in my area ...

Got through to the maternity unit. My referral request has been received, it's just not been appointed yet. There's been a bit of backlog apparently, but I should receive my appointment shortly, lets hope it doesn't take too long! I can't wait to actually see my baby now, still doesn't quite feel real at the moment.

Hopefully I haven't picked too busy a hospital and this is going to be a sign of things to come ...

I'm glad you've got some answers! I assume they'll take all of your bloods and officially book you in when you have the scan? Best of luck with it all Smile

Try and ring antenatal unit in the hospital, mine have me one too early so I went to it and they just sent me to antenatal reception to get another one after the scan 10+4 (no idea why they gave it then when they knew couldn't see what they needed to!) community midwife said they could when I raised the concern. Hospital midwives seemed unimpressed so I go through them mainly if I can as they seem more switched on!

I'm exactly 8 weeks today (according to my lmp and tracking app) and I received my booking in letter for when I'll be 12 weeks. I called up as apart from thinking it was quite late I couldn't actually make the appointment because nobody would be able to pick DS up from nursery and I don't want to take him with me to be honest. Anyway I explained the issue of childcare and also that it was quite late to be booked in and she said the latest they leave it is 12+6 and I'll be 12+4 as my new appointment is two days later 🤦🏻‍♀️ doubt I'll get a scan until 14 weeks but got a private reassurance scan booked this Sunday so 🤞🏻 I think there must be a baby boom! I hope you get an appointment sooner and don't have to wait too long! It's agony the first few weeks x

Momma22 · 03/10/2018 14:49

@largepinotplease so the latest they leave the booking in appointment is 12wksplus6? Do you know if that's the same for every area? If there's a medical reason for it (I.e needing bloods done by a certain point in the pregnancy) I'd imagine it would be the same everywhere wouldn't it? So if that's the case the latest I'll be having my appointment is Friday 19th October when I'm 12wksplus4 (12wksplus6 falls on a Sunday for me) hopefully that will be the case and I won't be waiting much longer. And hopefully my midwife's right and they will do the scan on the same day, I live half an hour away from the hospital and I'd rather not have to do the hour round trip twice in the same couple of weeks if I can help it, plus I'm desperate to see my baby asap!

I rang my gp surgery? The midwives have an afternoon there every week so just booked in via reception, I had that initial waste of time appointment with her and she booked me in for my booking appointment two weeks later xx

@Momma22 my booking app was at 8 weeks, my dating scan is at 13. I think they need to do first scan between 12-14 weeks as that's when it's most accurate to predict due date and when they do the downs and chromosome tests. I didn't have those blood tests just the first set of ones (sickle cell etc) as I went straight for the Harmony test but I still need the dating scan and for them to check how he is developing as that's when the skull is more developed and they can see any early issues I believe x

I had a similar thing in my area: appointment at 8 weeks with the midwife at the GP surgery which was quite brief, then full booking, bloods, weight etc. done when I went for my dating scan at 13 weeks, then a home visit at 16 weeks, anomaly scan at 20 weeks and 4 weekly midwife appointments at the GP surgery since then.
