Sweep/bloody show, your stories?

Hi ladies!

I'm 40+2 today and getting impatient!

I had a sweep yesterday at 3pm and the midwife seemed optimistic at how things were looking. I felt very crampy and uncomfortable for the rest of the day with some spotting but a hot bath eased the cramping quite a lot.

Then at 11pm I had what MUST have been my bloody show - I know to expect some bleeding after an internal exam but this was HUGE, mucusy and bloody, and in one big dollop (sorry for all the TMI!) so I'm sure that's what it was?

I got myself excited that things might be moving, but then I'm up and about this morning feeling COMPLETELY normal. I'd really hoped that I would go into labour in the night!

So I was wondering what everyone's experiences were with having their show after a sweep - did you go into labour not long after, or is there still every chance I could be kept waiting for a few weeks?

I know everyone's different but if nothing else you can all help distract me! Next plan is hoovering and going for a walk, want to wriggle this baby right out.

All of mine were born at 40+3 either one or two days after I had a sweep. With DC1 I was given a sweep on the Friday afternoon, I lost the plug that evening and he was born Sunday evening after a 24 hour labour.

For me the plug meant imminent labour but it sadly doesn’t for everyone. I hope it does for you though! Good luck.

I'm 40+1 had a sweep yesterday too. Had exactly the same as you but feel like things are easing off today.
With my 2nd DC had a sweep at 40+3 and he was born that night.
I think it will be imminent with this one but we just need to keep active today. Lots of walking and bouncing. Fingers crossed!!!

Lost my plug on Saturday morning. Didn’t feel any different. Waters went at 1.30am on Monday morning.

Teeterhop · 28/09/2018 10:37

All really positive stories so far, thanks all!

I know it isn't always the case that labour is imminent but it makes me feel better hearing that it could be.

Fingers crossed for you too NakedMum, hopefully we'll both be holding our little ones very soon!

I've been out for a walk and done lots of cleaning this morning so I'm already shattered but not had much effect otherwise! Just enough energy for bouncing on my ball while I have a cuppa.

I've had two sweeps, one with each of my 2DS.
The first (I was 39+2) was done mid morning, and I went into labour about 4-5 hours later, then gave birth later that night. I did have a show after but I didn't think much of it until the back pain etc started Grin!

The second time (I was 38+3) and I had a sweep. Had a show later that night, but then...nothing. I thought I would go into labour straight away like I did with my first DS, but no...I was so disheartened. Two days later I woke up in labour and had DS2 before lunch.

They have always worked for me, but I know lots of others who say it didn't do much, I think it all depends on if baby is ready or not. I wish you luck, and hopefully baby will be in your arms soon Smile x

I had a sweep 4pm on a Thurs with DS contractions started 3pm the Friday had him Sat morning. No show until I was in the bath in delivery suite 6cm dilated. Good luck.

WeakAsIAm · 28/09/2018 12:23

Had a sweep with my last two, both worked for me within 2 days so don't lose heart just yet.
My last sweep story is one of my favourites to tell. Went for my appointment seen by a very petite young woman (I'm only 5'4" myself) who asked if I would like a sweep. I agreed she went out and returned 5 mins later with the largest spade sized hands man I've ever seen. Honestly the fear almost put me into labour GrinGrin. It worked though an ds3 arrived 2 days later .

Good luck xx

I was due on the Sunday 30th August. I started having contractions on the Tuesday afternoon. I was booked in for a sweep on the Wednesday but I decided to wait and see if things progressed naturally. They didn't. I continued having contractions but the head wasn't fully engaged so nothing progressed.
I had a sweep at 3pm on the Friday, 40+5. I went to hospital at 9pm that night. At 10 I was in the birth centre. The midwife broke my waters at 2am. I gave birth at 6.58am, at 40+6, on Saturday 5th September, after four days of labour.
The sweep was painless for me though. Not uncomfortable at all.

Teeterhop · 29/09/2018 13:44

It's now been almost 48 hours since my sweep, 39 hours since I had my show, and no further progress.

Think it's fairly safe to say the sweep hasn't worked. I have another booked for Tuesday and can't help but be pretty sure I won't be going into labour before then.

Feeling pretty fed up! My ribs are sore, my back aches and I just want to meet my baby now.

I had my sweep Thursday at 4:30pm and gave birth to a beautiful boy at 5:50 this morning! I walked loads yesterday and spent a long time on my ball. X

ButAIBUtho · 29/09/2018 15:21

I always have a show after a sweep.

The sweep never works though.

s2204 · 29/09/2018 16:53

Wish I’d seen this thread before writing a new one Blush I’ve had exactly same experience! Now 48hours post sweep and nothing! I know baby will come when ready but I just don’t get it, I was 100% effaced and 2cm dilated at sweep.. how can nothing happen! 😭 I think it’s more frustrating because the midwife was so positive that it would work, it’s like a little kick down when it doesn’t! 😖 feeling your frustration x

SlimGin · 29/09/2018 17:16

I'm 41 weeks today Sad and lost my mucas plug this afternoon! I've not had a sweep at all as midwife said my cervix wasn't ready, so I've pestered DP for sex instead and I guess that has worked a bit. Since yesterday I've been having lots of cramping and feel like I could be in the earliest stages of early labour, lots of pain last night that woke me up, and then plug today. HOPEfully won't be too much longer but how can we say really!

Teeterhop · 29/09/2018 18:09

Thanks for coming back to update NakedMum, I'm so pleased the sweep worked for one of us (and obviously a bit jealous!). Congratulations on your baby boy, wonderful news!

Thanks for sharing your stories ladies, fingers crossed we all get some movement soon!

Had a sweep 1pm Friday at 40+1, started having period pains 2pm Saturday, waters broke 4am Sunday morning and lost plug about half an hour after that. Had DS at 12.51pm Sunday afternoon.

Mississippilessly · 29/09/2018 18:50

slim dont lose hope - i was 41 weeks when my midwife said i was too far off to have a sweep. I was 4cm within 24 hrs x

sleepless19 · 29/09/2018 18:59

I had a sweep at 40+4 ( at 11.40am). My MW said I would need another and even booked in my induction as I was showing no signs of labour starting any time soon.
My waters broke at 1am that following morning (no contractions or any symptoms of labour before) and my DS was born 10 hours after that!
I know sweeps don't work for everyone but my MW obviously did something right!
Good luck OP - I hope it's not too much longer for you :)
