What does pre eclampsia feel like?

I've developed a pain under my right rib. Really, really painful. Baby is head down and I am 34 weeks. It's like an ache. Can't pinpoint it but it feels a bit deeper than my ribs. So hard to explain.

No other symptoms of PE apart from a bit of swelling. Blood pressure is higher than normal but not high. Still around 120/80.

Can anyone tell me what pe rib pain feels like?

Can anyone tell me what rib pain caused by baby feels like?

Having a bit of a worry...

I have had pre eclampsia but never had rib pain so no help to you. Are you having any other symptoms? To be honest I felt absolutely fine but blood pressure kept rising and swelling went totally nuts but I was hospitalised at that stage. If you are worried definitely go and get checked out tomorrow.

CherryRoseAnna · 22/09/2018 23:07

@SparkyBlue my BP was 90/60 beginning of pregnancy. It's now around 120/80 but feel absolutely fine. Swelling is minimal and gone by the morning.

It's just this pain but it honestly just feels like something is squishing my insides (which it is!). I just heard that you can get right hand side pain with pre eclampsia and because my BP has spiked a bit it's made me wonder...

Honestly I would call your midwife. It could be any number of things, hopefully nothing serious but you sound worried and that’s reason enough to get checked out.

CherryRoseAnna · 22/09/2018 23:09

@SpuriouserAndSpuriouser I'm not freaking out, but it is in the back of my head. Will definitely sleep on it and get it checked out in the morning if still bad. I have a feeling it is just baby in a funny position...

Definitely get it checked out. Sometimes we just get a gut feeling that something is "off". That absolutely doesn't mean that there is a serious issue. Best of luck

Thanks sparky - pregnancy is a bloody guessing game isn't it!! Get this baby out of me 🙈

I had quite intense rib pain, a headache like I've never had before or since (absolute agony) and sky high blood pressure.

Go and speak to your midwife

DorasBob · 22/09/2018 23:12

I’ve got preeclampsia at the moment.
Feel hungover everyday - headaches, nausea, extreme tiredness, swollen legs, breathless. Baby is also head down - I’m 32 weeks, and I get kicked in the ribs a lot.

Not had any rib/ abdominal pain - but I think the right sided abdominal pain can be a sign of HELLP syndrome, which is a dangerous preeclampsia variant. The pain is caused by problems with the liver, and it can be very serious.

If I were you, id ring the midwives and go in for bloods and a bp check. If it is preeclampsia you’d need regent treatment, and if not then you can relax

CherryRoseAnna · 22/09/2018 23:12

Sounds awful Billy - my 'rib' pain gets worse when in a certain position and disappears when I lay down making me think it's not PE. As I said, just have a niggling feeling in the back of my head that it could be! Definitely getting checked out tomorrow if it's not gone... I have a BP machine (well, my partner has and I've stolen it for a bit) and is still under 120/80 so will keep an eye!

That pain can also be trapped wind and its horrendeous i had it for weeks felt like i couldnt breathe . The only indication i had was flashing lights. My bp would be checked then the keytones or something in your wee. If your worried see your midwife dont worry about bothering them they would rather you get checked out.

BillywigSting · 22/09/2018 23:13

I also puffed up like a balloon.

Rib pain felt sort of bruise like, or like a constant pressure type pain (as though baby was constantly kicking the same spot so it feels very tender). Could describe it as an ache but quite an intense one.

findingmywaytoday · 22/09/2018 23:15

Please call your dr / midwife and get checked out. And don't worry about what anyone might think better to be safe than sorry.

BillywigSting · 22/09/2018 23:15

Aye it wasn't much fun!
Ds got booted out at term though via induction that went really well, I stabilised with meds and felt as alright as you can in late pregnancy after that

DorasBob · 22/09/2018 23:15

If it is PE, the pain is caused by liver swelling, so could still disappear in certain positions.

Reassuring about your BP though.

But, I can’t think of a ‘normal’ reason why you’d have pain under your ribs in pregnancy? My baby moves all over the place, it’s uncomfortable but not painful. Doesn’t sound right to me

CherryRoseAnna · 22/09/2018 23:21

Will update in the morning I guess! Pregnancy is so stressful. I've only just reached the point this week where I really want baby out. Thought I was invincible until about 3 days ago Grin

For me I just had breathlessness and swollen legs, no rib pain.

mumoftwox · 23/09/2018 08:37

I had pre eclampsia with both pregnancys first time I was dazed, banging headache, couldn't look at light, felt sick and dizzy and my whole body was swollen but you can have less symptoms and have pre eclampsia but blood in the urine or high blood pressure is a good indicator

Sunflower2018 · 23/09/2018 11:18

@CherryRoseAnna I am in the exact same situation. I wrote a thread on here asking what it could be and was said it could be P.E. I even went to triage as the pain was so bad but couldn't find anything. Both Dr and MW thinks it's just bruising from the baby... It is agony as it's so blunt and painful. If you haven't already I suggest getting a large pregnancy pillow and lie on your left side then swap to your right and so on. That's the only thing that 'helps' me...

X

Any update OP?

dreamyflower · 23/09/2018 20:10

I had preeclampsia. I had severe headache and spike in BP. Wasn't particularly swollen. If you're worried call midwife.
