Giving up smoking

Hi Ladies,
I am currently 5weeks pregnant and have cut down massively on smoking, gone from 20 a day to less than 5 now, doing well but obviously could do better- I have an appointment with the stop smoking nurse on the 3rd October (the soonest they could see me apparently) Just want to see what has worked for all of you if you have successfully given up?

Literally just cold turkey. Had one last one straight after the positive test and that was that. Try distracting yourself with something else when you would usually have a cigarette?

I went cold turkey the day I got my positive test. I'd tried unsuccessfully to quit for years, but getting that BFP definitely gave me to kick up the arse I needed.

I stopped straight after a positive test. I chew gum or eat mints when I'm in places where I used to smoke, or when I'm out walking, it works to distract me.

I'm another that stopped straight after my BFP.

I used the NHS stop smoking service. I cut down to a few a day and then used them to quit. I found them really supportive and non-judgmental. It can be very hard - apparently for some women their pregnancy craving is nicotine! But you've done really well so far, use the service and the patches for a while if you need to.

I quit within 2 weeks of BFP.

Good
Luck

I smoked about 5 a day until my first scan (10 weeks) and when i saw my baby i couldn't touch another cig so i went on ecig with lowest nicotine. Carried on with that until my 20 week scan and when i saw my baby again i decided immediately to never touch the ecig again. It's really easy to quit with a good reason. It's mainly the fear of how hard it will be to stop that's scary.

I went cold turkey after BFP as well but I was already down to 5 or fewer a day by that point anyway. You've done really well to cut down that much already. Good luck with the next step!

SophieStripe · 21/09/2018 18:57

I had cut down already (e.g no breaks during work and only really when out drinking and one in the morning with coffee). I then just went cold turkey. It is possible!! Still think of the enjoyment of sitting with a drink and a cig on a summers eve but the actual smell and therefore probably the taste makes me feel sick now!

SophieStripe · 21/09/2018 19:03

For me what helped was cos I was pregnant I just didn't go for after work drinks as much. If I ever did want one I would just think how I would feel if there was anything wrong with my baby and the lifetime of not knowing if I had caused it. Also my husband doesn't smoke and hates it and it's his baby too. It's not fair to potentially be harming his baby by me doing something. Not to mention the baby gets no choice! I'm not saying it's easy, but it is easier than you think. Just decide which one is your last one and chuck everything away. Lighters emergency packets whatever. Remove ALL temptation. When I was trying to quit before being pregnant I would still buy cigs to have with me incase my cravings got the better of me and 'just in case'. Doesn't work. You have to decide to quit and stick to it. That's what worked for me anyway!

overagain · 21/09/2018 19:59

Thurlow I can well believe that. I haven't smoked for about 10 years and found quitting really easy but I'm currently pregnant and want one every time I see someone smoking! Despite the smell making me feel sick.

Thanks everyone, I seem to really be craving them more than ever - craving them so much I could eat a pouch of backy however strange that sounds, I have cut down to 1 a day now that I have with my morning cup of tea and plan to take this out completely in the next couple of days, I thought it would be a lot easier after seeing my BFP but sadly it wasnt as simple as I hoped!
