Perioral Dermatitis in pregnancy?

Hello there 👋

Has anyone suffered from Perioral Dermatitis when pregnant? I’m having an awful time with it- going on 9 weeks now. It’s really starting to get me down. I initially went to the doctors who prescribed a very mild hydrocortisone cream without diagnosing exactly what the rash was- it went away but then came straight back as soon as I stopped using the cream. I’ve since read that topical steroids should be avoided at all costs with Perioral Dermatitis 🙈.

I haven’t been back to the doctors yet, as I’m unsure if there’s anything they can give me while pregnant. I’m fairly sure it’s hormonal as I don’t suffer from sensitive skin and have never had anything like this before.

I know I could have much worse problems, but I’m just so self-conscious about it.

Any advice out there? Xx

I had it for years and then it stopped as soon as I got pregnant.... weird!

But I found before being pregnant, the only way to keep it at bay was to not use facial wash or splash hot water directly onto my face, in the shower I would rub water and mild soap on face and not keep it on for too long. For moisturiser I used olive or coconut oil. Makeup never seemed to make a difference so I’d use that anyway. I’ve heard diet changes can help too but I never tried it.

Thanks for the advice. I’ve just switched to a mineral makeup as I’ve read that’s less irritating and there’s no way I can face the world without it. I’ve been using very gentle skincare. Hormones are lovely aren’t they? I’ve never had anything like this before and don’t suffer from any dry skin conditions at all xxx

@RD15 Hi there,
I see this is an old post. I am 27 weeks pregnant at the moment and have had PD since the very start. I have been to 2 doctors one being a specialist, and neither will prescribe anything to clear it while I am pregnant.
I am worried that there will be lasting effects on the baby from this extended period of inflammation. Were there any on your LO?
Thanks for any info

Hi, old thread but wanted to say that it is possible to treat PD in pregnancy. My dermatologist just prescribed me antibiotics that are safe to use in pregnancy. A no go with PD is a topical steroid cream like Hydrocortisone for it - it will just make it worse.
