Could do with some advice. Am 30 weeks pregnant (30+1) and was just driving home from the supermarket an hour ago and had a sudden very sharp back pain. It got worse and worse and was difficult to drive. When I got home the back pain became even stronger. I took two paracetamol and put a heat pad on my back. The pain came in waves - I had four waves and at the peak I had to be on all fours. However, now it's subdued. I still have a lower back ache but nowhere near as strong, it's more a dull ache.
I was going to call the hospital at its peak but now I feel a bit silly doing that. Could it have been Braxton Hicks? I still feel a bit funny and am going to try and watch something on tv to relax, but it's no longer as painful.

I don’t think so. Braxton Hicks tend to be tightening at the front. I find them uncomfortable but definitely not painful. No real obvious peak either, at least not like the contractions I had with DD. Saying that I can feel BH build up for maybe 10 seconds then be constant for 30 seconds before tapering off. I do get them regularly sometimes.
I've never felt the need to take any pain relief for them.

I wouldn't say so. BH are supposed to be painless. Now I've had some that have caused me some slight pain and discomfort but nothing like that.

I'd say you need to ring triage and be checked out. The fact that paracetamol didn't seem to work and that the pain came in waves is worrying and you should definitely be checked out in the unlikely event of preterm labour.

Alternatively, maybe it was just another one of those pregnancy things but definitely get checked out.
