I am due to have my first c section next week and as I'm heading into town tomorrow id like to know what must haves you had for your c section during the post partum period?

Massive pants, multipack in black from the supermarket. Stacks of maternity pads (pop one on your pants over your scar for comfort, it’s bliss!) and a big snuggly dressing gown.

It was pretty painful afterwards, but easier than being pregnant for me. I got one shot of morphine which was lovely, then had a mix of dihydracodeine, paracetamol and ibuprofen. As PP have said, keep yourself topped up on the painkillers, I didn’t and holy shit it hurt!

Eat plenty of fibre, this is gross and probably tmi, but the first poo afterwards was bloody agonising!

I bought nighties but didn’t wear them, I wore some extremely large pj bottoms that went practically up to my boobs, and flip flops as my feet were too swollen for anything else.

Piriton- the drugs they gave me during the section made me unbearably itchy. The itchiness was by far the worst bit of the immediate aftermath and it lasted nearly 24 hours. It was awful.

Apart from that I'd agree with big pants, high waisted trousers and slip on shoes - I could walk without much difficulty but bending was tricky.
Once home, I'd make sure to have something in for trapped wind that can enter your system during the surgery - I felt it in my shoulders weirdly enough.

  • Water bottle. You'll get water but you'll want to stay hydrated , especially if you are planning on BF.
  • Big knickers are a must
  • Nightie, dressing gown and slippers
  • Flip Flops (if you intend on having a shower you will want flip flops, trust me!)
  • Toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste etc)
  • Mirror
  • Hairbrush
  • Snacks (cereal bars, crisps etc)
  • More clothes than you think you'll need for baby
  • something to wear for leaving the hospital. Maternity leggings and a long top would be ideal as the wasistband won't sit in your scar.
  • Books/Kindle, magazines, iPad, earphones etc.

Not an exhaustive list but all the things I found I needed.

Omg yes the itching! I had forgotten about that! It was only 17 weeks ago for me as well Blush we must be programmed to forget the bad bits or would never have more than one baby!

Bought some big knickers from primark last week, hope they'll be ok. Or do I need better ones? Just bought a pair of flip flops on eBay too😂 I'm gonna buy more nighties tomorrow and deffo gonna get my DP to bring me some fibre filled snacks and drinks. I don't like prune juice though, is pear juice just as good?
I remember my first PP poo after vaginal birth with DD, bloody terrible!!!

I got my massive pants from Tesco but that’s because I couldn’t make it to primark!

Have googled it and pear juice is on the top three fibre juices, the other one is apple juice. I didn’t know anything about it (my firsts) until the time came 😬

Good luck for next week!

mamaandthegirls · 20/09/2018 21:22

@Thakku so sorry for your loss. Losing a child is the most heartbreaking thing. What caused your baby girls death? I'm so sorry. I would say to try again when you're mentally and physically ready, whenever that maybe.
