Really stupid question

I’m really sorry for the stupid question but this is my first time and I’m a bit confused about how many weeks pregnant I am!

My last period started 23rd July so most apps put me at 8 weeks pregnant. My periods were a bit all over the place though with cycles ranging from 15 to 32 days, so imagine this affects things? Different apps have my due date ranging from 29 April - 5 May.

Also, I obviously wasn’t pregnant during the first couple of weeks! Am I right in thinking people still would say 8 weeks though? Reason I ask is I have a reassurance scan booked for Saturday but they say they’re more accurate at 8 weeks, so don’t know if I should wait if I’m actually only 6 weeks!

Any advice much appreciated!

Based on a normal cycle length of 28 days and the first day of your last bleed being the 23rd of July then you are eight weeks pregnant. Pregnancy is dated weirdly as the first two weeks before ovulation are counted in the total time pregnant.

If your cycles are irregular this will change things a bit. What's your average / most common cycle length? I'd probably use that when calculating due date.

A few days here or there makes very little difference TBH. Although I can understand you wanting to have a good idea of where you are so you don't have your scan too early. You should be fine at around eight weeks though.

Hi,
Congratulations.
Pregnancies are dated from your last period usually, so the average woman would be 4 weeks pregnant on the first day of her missed period due to pregnancy, though it would be likely she had only conceived two weeks ago.
The date based on your 12 week scan tends to be taken as the due date once you've had that.
Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. I was worried that I’d actually be 6 weeks instead of 8 but sounds like everyone uses the last period date, so hopefully all should be fine! Maybe they’ll even be able to date me at the reassurance scan

@isl7 I am the very same as you last period was July 23rd and just confirmed today that I am 8 weeks..although like you I think only about 6 but the GP who was very helpful said to work off 8!

Going off LMP I would be 13+1 but scan 2 weeks ago pushed me back 1 week so I'm 12+1 today. My cycles would be 32 usually and I ovulated the 3rd week after AF so had a fair idea it would be changed.

I had a reassurance scan at 9 weeks with DC1 and part of the scan was measuring the embryo and they told me how far along the baby was measuring. Although the official due date will still always be based on dating from 12 week scan.

Thanks everyone! And that’s funny Lorrie3 ! We’ll have to see what both our official due dates come out as!

@Isl7 today I was told April 29th so let’s see what the scan says! Gonna be such a long wait!!

My original dates went off my LMP (when I had a GP appointment. My actual booking in appointment with the midwife came after the 12 week scan Hmm) When I had my scan, I was put back 10 days. I suspected the original dates were a week or so out because I had been having 5 week cycles since having my DD. The scan date is the date they then work from for everything.

BrewsD · 18/09/2018 11:13

As mentioned already we were originally working off LMP too but I had an early scan at what I thought was 8 weeks with due date of 20th November but this scan dated the foetus at 6+3. I then went for what I thought was my 12 week dating scan and based on size of foetus I was dated at 13+2. My due date has changed 3 times but we're now working off the dating scan and baby is due 29th November. I found it all very confusing!
