Leukocytes and protein in urine and swollen...

I’ve been feeling very uncomfortable recently. I’m 33 weeks. At my last midwife appointment, I was certain I had a water infection because it was painful when I passed urine. I was told I have white cells in my urine sample and this was sent to the lab but came back as ‘normal’. I booked a gp appointment as I still felt like lava (when discharge came out although by this point it no longer hurt to pee - sorry tmi). The gp told me my results were not ‘normal’ but rather than my Urine sample growing one bacteria, it grew lots of bugs!! I did another sample for the gp (again didn’t hurt to wee) but i had leukocytes and protein. Again, my sample was sent off. The doctor gave me antibiotics to treat me for a suspected water infection.

I’ve taken all of the antibiotics but I am still very sore. I am incredibly sensitive, feel ‘swollen’ down there.. almost like I’ve had lip fillers!! Sex is also very painful. The first inch/2inches feels like a horrible burn so it’s currently off the table.

Can anyone advise? I’m planning on going back to the doctors tomorrow but I can see the same thing happening. Give a urine sample, it gets sent off because the dip stick says stuff is there that shouldn’t be, then I get a ‘normal’ result

You could have pre-eclampsia, which can be very serious. I got a very urgent call from my gynaecologist ordering me to be admitted for 24hr monitoring when I developed mild proteinuria at about 23 weeks.

@villainousbroodmare - thank you for replying. That is my concern and I feel dreadful saying this as I’m sure she’s a wonderful woman to even be in the job, but I think I’ve got a rubbish midwife! I hope everything turned out okay for you

Yes, it did. I just had a mild proteinuria throughout but got to 38 weeks and have lovely fat 3mo twins now. I had to get twice-weekly blood pressure checks all the way along... is there anywhere that would check your BP today? If it's raised or if you develop any unusual swelling you'd better get yourself to hospital pronto! I would push for more attention to be paid to this and v soon. Let me know how you are doing.

Sounds a lot more like thrush, BV or another infection than pre-eclampsia. You can have protein in your urine if the sample is contaminated by vaginal discharge, which with your symptoms, it almost definitely would be. This would also account for the leucocytes.

Ahh yes perhaps that’s it! I will request a swab to be taken. Thank you for the comment

Sure does, Starfish, bet you're right. I just saw 'proteinuria and swelling', added 2 and 2 and got 22 Blush

I was thinking thrush too, your symptoms sound similar to mine when I had thrush when I was pregnant.

Many women get varicose veins around their vulva when pregnant. This might account for the pain and swelling? You can see them if you use a hand mirror. I had this in 2 of my 3 pregnancies and it was very painful, especially when I stood up.
