I'm 6 days late but got a negative result

Hi, I'm new to this but I wanted advice. I've always been 28 days no exception, me and my DH have been trying for 3 months and this time I think it's it. I'm 6 days late and I've got lot of pregnancy symptoms and no period ones. I was devastated when I saw Not Pregnant on the test and now I'm worried it could be something worse. Is this common or should I seek medical attention?

There's at least a thread a week with the same title. Late period and negative tests. It's extremely common. So common that the GP won't be interested unless you miss two periods.

Sometimes it's a delayed period due to delayed ovulation or perhaps no ovulation at all. Maybe a chemical pregnancy. Occasionally, it's a viable pregnancy. I think all you can do is wait a few days and test again if your period hasn't arrived.

As soon as I started trying to conceive my periods began coming later than they ever have, giving me false hope plenty of times. It's strange what the body does!

bluebell34567 · 15/09/2018 09:55

i think the season can cause the delay in periods as well.
its too early, give it a week and then take a test again.

I've had months where Ive completely skipped a period. Maybe didn't ovulate or whatever .

But also with DC1 didn't get a bfp until I was ten days late and even then it was faint

MLTS · 15/09/2018 09:58

My period was 2 and half weeks late and I got negative tests every day right up until the end of the 3rd week... then finally a positive!

aburrow93 · 15/09/2018 09:58

I had this exact thing period kept coming later and later for like 3 months each month I was convinced I had symptoms but always had negative tests would always take one like every other day! Eventually I just kind of gave up and relaxed, we went on holiday around conception then when my period was five days late I had no symptoms other than my boobs had grown so thought I had better take one (grudgingly as I expected it to be neagtive) however it was positive. Just goes to show how our bodies deceive us then surprise us. However that being said have heard of several people who had negative tests but were pregnant so finger crossed for you.

BillywilliamV · 15/09/2018 10:02

That happened to me, but another test a week later was positive.

MakeAWhish · 15/09/2018 10:14

More than occasionally it's a viable pregnancy!
I didn't get a BFP til I was 10 days late (calculated on my shortest cycle.
Have you tested with a FRER? They seem to be the best at detecting lower levels of hcg xx

disneyprincess91 · 15/09/2018 14:09

Thank you! I just feel silly as I've spent most of my day crying feeling like I was excited and then a huge downer! I think maybe tv has always had me believe that one day late and it will show! I've never been through any of this before and I'm so confused by it all 😂 I will wait a couple weeks and try a test again or I'll of come on. Sorry for sounding like an idiot but the internet can be so confusing.

I notice you said that the test said not pregnant does that mean you used a digital? Just because, they're not actually as sensitive as a lot of other tests and many people find they have to be a bit further gone to get a positive.

I'd definitely recommend a First Response test Smile

disneyprincess91 · 15/09/2018 16:51

Yes I used a digital one, I've read they are 97%. Is first response the brand? In our local supermarket we have clear blue and Tesco own. I'm feeling much better now the day has done on and I'll see in another week or so.

First Response is the brand yes Smile they're known to be good for early, accurate results. Failing that, the own brand pink dye cheapie tests can be quite sensitive!

Thank you x

I ovulate at day 11 of my cycle, so always got positives quite early. If you ovulate later, it will be the opposite.
I found using OPKs for a few months was very useful. Thanks

MrsDrambuie · 15/09/2018 21:54

Also test using your pee in the morning, that will give you a more accurate result than during the day when you are drinking more water / tea etc so it’s more diluted.

@disneyprincess91 I hear you! I posted on here about the same thing 2 weeks ago! I’m usually like clockwork 28 days, missed period in August when I was 2 weeks late went to docs she did a test and said very strong negetive. And to retest in a week if still no period... that was 10 days ago as I was travelling . So I am due to retest tomorrow... I’m so confused as I feel I’ve put on tummy weight and bigger boobs and cramps but that’s all!

disneyprincess91 · 15/09/2018 23:36

@Lorrie3 I know my boobs have got bigger as I'm in the middle of weight loss and I measure ever 4 weeks. I still feel that I am pregnant but I was just worried as it's the weekend and I wasn't sure if a health reason could cause me to not bleed. Good luck on your test! The worst part for me is I haven't told my husband as he's on a stag weekend and I'm bursting and still undecided if I'm going to tell him incase I get his hopes up.

Agree re: digital - they are not very sensitive. If you Google there are loads of websites that list the sensitivity of different pregnancy tests based on the minimum concentration of HCG they can detect.

Good luck OP, I hope it is good news! Unfortunately most "pregnancy symptoms" are pretty much identical to symptoms that you can often get before a period (it is the same hormone that causes early pregnancy symptoms) so it's easy to get your hopes up. My first month TTC I was CONVINCED that I was pregnant, I had so many symptoms. Needless to say I was very much not pregnant.
The body can play tricks cruel unfortunately.

I hope in your case it is just a shy BFP. Let us know how you get on.

Lorrie3 · 18/09/2018 09:11

Hi @disneyprincess91 I posted on another thread. But just to update you I did the retest on Sunday and got a very strong BFP... had it confirmed by doc yesterday and I’m 8 weeks....you can imagine my shock. So that would mean even I tested negetive up to 3 weeks late and I was 4 nearly 5 weeks late when the positive showed up!!
