Sleeping on your tummy

Hi all,

Really silly question but why can't you sleep on your tummy when you have a bump? Is it because you will squish the baby? I'm actually embarrassed to ask the question but I just don't know! Lol.

Probably not very comfy lying on a big bump

Smellybean · 11/09/2018 20:44

There came a point when I literally couldn’t. Bump was too big.
There are positions which let a good blood flow to baby apparently ( on your left ). So I slept this way for the last 6 months of my pregnancy Sad I was not happy.

I'm just not sleeping well on my side and my shoulders and neck are beyond a joke since I always sleep on my tummy. I don't feel uncomfortable on my tummy at the moment so wondered if I could if no harm would come to him?

Too uncomfortable!

AussieMum28 · 11/09/2018 20:52

I'm 22 weeks but thank you for the link. It was very informative!

I slept on my stomach until it wasn't comfortable anymore - maybe around 22/23 weeks? After that I kind of naturally switched to sleeping on my side.

MissTeye · 11/09/2018 21:00

Have you tried a pregnancy pillow to get a bit more comfortable? Sleeping on side is best if possible

AussieMum28 · 11/09/2018 21:04

I've got one I just don't find it overly helpful! My shoulders are just achey for laying on them all night

I bought a tempur pillow in last pregnancy which really helped me sleep.
I sleep on my tummy as well and I think just on side last time left cause it's better for sore bellies.

I miss sleeping on my tummy so much! 36 weeks now. I did carry on sleeping on my tummy until it became uncomfortable, probably around 20 weeks. I'd have no chance now! I've been sleeping on my side (either one) with a pillow between my legs for the last few months. Can't get on with my pregnancy pillow this time, which is weird because i loved it last pregnancy.

Emmafh3 · 11/09/2018 21:15

The talk is all about blood flow but honestly, I slept on my back for the large part of my last pregnancy and this time I'm either on my tummy or back.
When bump got too big around 30weeks I couldn't do either so was forced to side sleep with about a dozen pillows around me. My shoulders and back just hurt so badly. Just had to get on with it or not sleep in my house! Not looking forward to side sleeping this time...
So long as you're comfy, keep doing what you're doing

Ahhhhhh at last - another person who understands my pain! I'm 15 weeks and keep waking up back on my tummy! I'm really trying to sleep on my side but it's just not comfy. When I was pregnant with my first I had the most horrific pain in my hips from sleeping on my side and all the extra weight pushing through them! Only 25 weeks until I will be back on my tummy!! Grin

AussieMum28 · 11/09/2018 21:24

Thanks for all the advice! Maybe i just need to try a different pillow. I'm sure my little munchkin will let me know if he doesn't like me sleeping on my tummy! Lol

I'm 29 weeks and keep waking up kind of half on my side half on my tummy.

MitchDash · 11/09/2018 21:34

4 pregnancies but 3 of them I couldn't sleep on stomach. My 3rd pregnancy however, liked me to sleep on him and I did until very late in the pregnancy. He has autism so I do wonder if it was an indicator as he has a weighted blanket and has always liked small spaces.
