Hi there, I'm almost 20 weeks pregnant with my first baby and starting to think what I really need to buy but a bit overwhelmed by it all.

Can anybody give me any tips on what is actually needed and what you can probably do without?

I don't want to buy loads of stuff I don't need and end up not using it.

The "must have" lists are designed to overwhelm first time parents, most of them are full of so much stuff that no one needs or doesn't really fit in with your lifestyle.

All you really need is:
Somewhere for the baby to sleep (Moses basket/crib/cot/cotbed/info on safe co-sleeping)
Something to travel safely (group 0+ car seat, lie flat pushchair/sling)
Something to eat (boobs/bottles/formula)
Something to wear (6-8 babygrows, 6-8 vests, 1 hat, 1 cardigan) plus nappies.

For me I found a bath support, travel change mat and a white noise machine very useful but they're optional extras really.

Also remember that you don't need to decide everything you need before baby is born. If you find you want a swing, a mat, a blanket etc etc turn you can order most things online or nip to the shops

Yup YerAuntFanny is absolutely right. Remember people like to buy clothes for babies - if you have too many outfits for a baby exchange them to either bigger sizes or more practical vests/sleepsuits. Buy less now and invest in amazon prime. Get what you need when you need it. I was surprised how many people bought us presents!
