Will my appetite come back once my morning sickness has gone?

Hi, as the title says really! I’m 11+5, I haven’t been sick just felt very nauseous but this had started to pass over the last week. But, I have gone off all normal foods. Can’t eat anything ‘normal’ - made plain chicken and rice for tea and couldn’t even eat that. Everything makes my stomach roll, but unless I eat I feel sick so I feel like I’m in a no win situation! Only sort of things I want to eat are mini waffles with syrup and cereals.

Will I be able to eat more normally once the first trimester is over?

Yup! I was the exact same - went off anything with any kind of strong flavour and only really wanted white carbs during first trimester Confused Normal appetite gradually resumed in the second trimester Smile

Absolutely! I suffered with the WORST morning sickness - to the point for two weeks I ate nothing but small bowls of plain pasta - no oil, no salt, no butter, nothing! And water. And I was off work with exhaustion and nausea. It's amazing how much you can throw up despite not having eaten anything. Two fucking weeks!! Was horrible.

I'm now 20 weeks and honestly since about the 13th week, I've been completely fine. My tastes have changed weirdly - I was a huge sweet tooth and now prefer more savoury, barely ate fruit and now I can't get enough, only ever ate chicken and fish (no red meat) and craving hamburgers!

Battle on through, it will get easier. And it'll be worth it all in the end!

I'm 23 weeks and only just started getting an appetite back.

SleepyMcEdie · 04/09/2018 20:41

I’m exactly the same. Not being sick but eating anything makes me feel really nauseous.

HayCaramba · 05/09/2018 05:11

I was the same. Just eat what you feel like and take your prenatal vitamin!

That's if the MS goes, some women suffer till 6 months, some for the whole 40 weeks. I think the majority only suffer for the First Trimester, but as you may have gathered, the title Morning Sickness is misleading as it can strike whenever.

I hope you're one of the lucky ones & get your appetite back.

My tastes also completely changed. I suggest walking around a supermarket when you have plenty of time to see if anything unexpected tickles your fancy. Otherwise, carry on with the mini-waffles.

Thanks everyone. I’m finding some days are worse than others. My nausea had seemed to ease but has come back with a vengeance and there’s just hardly anything I want to eat! Trying to eat plain rice last night made me physically retch. I’m just going to try and eat as much I can of what I fancy, and yep I’m taking my vitamins daily! Xx

Do you have foods you really like or crave? For me it was anything involving vinegar. I had bad MS, the Dr said to get ice pops as they're a good way of getting fluids plus sugars. I was also told to graze little and often.

So if there's something you like, say fruit of some kind. Prep some each day, then snack when you feel hungry. I found out rather late that ginger ale was good for when you felt particularly rough.

I was like this until about 12-13 weeks, lost weight because I was struggling so much to eat. My appetite then went crazy for a few weeks and I was eating like a horse! Settled back to normal from about 16 weeks onwards so I think it was just my body making up for the first trimester.

Rednaxela · 05/09/2018 09:50

Eat whatever you can and try not to worry.

My MS lasted until well into 2nd trimester. Went off all normal foods and lived off plain carbs, mostly Pringles and Quavers... rice cakes.. Quavers I don't even like but got a craving!! Constantly nibbling was the only thing that helped.

After that I made up for it by eating huge portions of almost everything all through 3rd trimester Grin

What helped me mentally with MS was taking it one moment at a time and reminding myself how lucky I was to have a body that was growing a baby.

Thanks all so much for your comments. Talk of ice pops has made me really want some so getting a few boxes on my way home from work! X

My MS wore off after about 16 weeks, and I started fancying foods again. But, I've found I can't eat half as much as I want to at the minute- and will be faced with heartburn if I do.

HopelessWanderer · 05/09/2018 17:39

Is there a pattern when it gets worse at all? Just wondering if there's a smell or something that could be triggering it. For me it was bacon & fish, ooh and garlic. I would avoid them like the plague as I knew it made me bad.

There's a new type of Smash out that's on offers, it's meant to be really good. Over making yourself bad by standing peeling potatoes, maybe having a few short cut foods would be good.

A relative swore by arrowroot crackers / biscuits, but the magic didn't rub off on me. Envy

I think it was a generic ginger ale I tried in the final trimester, it really did work. I remember as we were at a party, I was offered some, as it made me feel better (sipping slowly - with or without ice) I went a bit crazy for it.

I think it's actually the progesterone that made me sick, as when I tried progesterone contraceptives it was the same as MS. I had to beg the clinic to remove the implant I had it was that bad.

Don't feel guilty about comfort foods, to be honest low blood sugar can make things worse, so all the more reason to have a few sweet things now and then.

Really honestly hope it passes ASAP, I hope you find some safe foods / drink that don't trigger the nausea or vomiting.
