We r getting a new kitchen fitted at the moment and the electrician and plumbers are having to chase a pipes/ wires into the walls, as our house was built in 1929 the stuff they used on the bricks is lath and plaster grey soot, we have covered over the living room so we can still use it as open plan but does anyone know if the dust will be harmful to me and baby? I’m 30 weeks. Thanks u

Personally whether I was pregnant or not I try to stay away from dusty building environments where possible only because you may trigger breathing issues as buildings are full of nasties particularly if they are old.

If you don't work in the building trade then your exposure to anything will be limited so won't be regarded as being at a dangerous level. When building work was done on where I live there was asbestos and lead piping, however when I looked up how dangerous they were it was the tradesmen who were at risk not the occupants regardless of age.

My DH and DF tore down our (19th century lath and plaster - and full of all kinds of shit) bedroom ceiling when I was 8 weeks pregnant and stuck in the spare bedroom horizontal and vomiting with hyperemesis. I’m also asthmatic.

On reflection, probably not the best idea. But at least the ceiling hasn’t collapsed on me (it was very bowed) and me and baby have survived with no ill effects. Currently 40 weeks and baby is still growing well and we’ve had no issues on any scans (had growth scans at 28 and 32 weeks). Unfortunately he’s very comfortable where he is though!

I wouldn’t have thought it was the best environment for you but the chances of it actually having any real effect are absolutely tiny.

We are currently renovating a 120yo house, which is quite a dusty job and I haven't given it a second thought. But we did the same when I was pregnant with DS- I was demolishing a kitchen at 30 weeks! DS is fine.
