I like it! Makes me think of Orlando Bloom, never a bad thing . I was good friends in uni with a guy named Orlando and he was the nicest person, very funny and sweet. I think it's a more common Latin name, my uni friend is Cuban, but I'm surprised so many people here find it so unusual. I think it's a lovely name for a boy tho. Homer on the otherhand.. not so much!!

Pruuni · 06/06/2007 11:10

I think you can get away with Orlando if you move in very educated middle class academic circles, don't give a stuff what other people think, and in any case your son is going to go to school with Rollo and Remus and Horatio and Araminta and Hepzibah et al.

SSSandy2 · 06/06/2007 11:10

sounds a bit flamboyant - suit maybe an opera singer very well, not so sure about a bank teller. I don't think it sounds bad though

rhubarb90 · 06/06/2007 11:11

Personally, I think it sounds a bit pretentious too. I suppose Olly for short wouldn't be too bad though.

kittypants · 06/06/2007 11:12

.no but then works for mr bloom.

RnBee · 06/06/2007 11:14

I think Orlando is lovely. Jayden is definitely Argos imo

goingfor3 · 06/06/2007 11:16

I love the name Orlando but I couldn't do it baecause it would remind me of bloom and Florida. Shame because it is so nice.

honeyapple · 06/06/2007 11:16

Prunni- I actually like all those names .
I think Araminta is a great name... Minty for short...

nickytwotimes · 06/06/2007 11:17

makes me think Virginia Wolf. never a good thing...!

goingfor3 · 06/06/2007 11:18

Jayden = Argos lol!!!!!!!!!!

MrsBadger · 06/06/2007 11:19

Araminta and Antigone - Minty and Tiggy...

[dreams]

kittypants · 06/06/2007 11:20

mrs badger i know a araminta,lovely name

Pruuni · 06/06/2007 11:20

I think Minty/Araminta isn't a bad name at all, but unfortunately it's come to represent a particular stereotype

BrothelSprouts · 06/06/2007 11:21

not keen.
would make me think the child was conceived in a disney hotel.

MrsBadger · 06/06/2007 11:25

hence the dreams, Pruners, hence the dreams.

the Cub will be something practical and sensible like James or Rachel.

honeyapple · 06/06/2007 11:37

No! Don't do it MrsBadger- hold on to your dreams!

I worked with an Antigone once... she called herself Noni for short.

AnneJones · 06/06/2007 11:48

FWIW, I like the name Orlando, it has a nice sound. If it works with your surname and you like it, I'd say go ahead.

But then if you ask opinions on names you are bound to get the whole gamut of them - everyone has opinions on them and you can't please everyone. Which is why I won't be involving anyone outsie DH and self in that decision

toadstool · 06/06/2007 14:47

Hmm, not sure. Orlando Furioso, not good if he has colic. Virginia Woolf's Orlando changes sex, doesn't s/he? I'm biased -I've encountered one Orlando in RL (rather than onscreen) and he was a pompous a**e.

hana · 06/06/2007 14:49

not a fan,
just thinkg of Florida

donnie · 06/06/2007 14:50

Orlando used to be a romantic Shakespearian name but alas no longer - it has been hijacked and come to be associated with fat people and dolphins!

As for Jayden - pure vomitsville. Argos? it's just not that classy!

oliveoil · 06/06/2007 14:51

no to Orlando

hana · 06/06/2007 14:58

same with Phoebe

NoodleStroodle · 06/06/2007 14:59

Love it

wheniamqueen · 06/06/2007 15:04

Hmmmm its bit Mr. Bloom so i don't like it

binker · 06/06/2007 15:28

don't like Jayden at all I'm afraid - I'm not keen on 'made up' names really (unless Jayden is an old biblical name and I'm entirely mistaken..
