Stretch and sweep

Evening 😊

Even though I'm a mum to 4, I've never had a stretch and/or sweep.

I'm taking DD to her 38 week mw appt tomorrow, is she likely to be offered one? They seem to be more common nowadays?

I think my DD would probably rather know beforehand, if it's likely to be an option. (She has tactile aversion, so will need to psych herself up).

TIA Flowers

No not at 38 weeks.

Any good MW won't do this until she is actually over due.

I was offered one on my due date at the appointment before (but declined) then booked one in for 40 + 5.

My experience was ‘would you like one on x date?’ rather than it being sprung on me on the day. I think it varies depending on where you are though.

My mw wanted me to have an s&s “to get things moving” at 39 weeks which I didn’t appreciate since I wasn’t overdue, hadn’t got any issues & the baby wasn’t large.
It is optional, you are entitled to say no thank you.
I went into labour naturally at 40+4 so I couldn’t see any benefit but unnecessary stress. MW couldn’t tell me benefits either.

I looked up the statistics of them working, as they don't offer them in many countries, and it is something like 25%. Also it's clear from the threads in the childbirth section that unless you are likely to go into labour then there is no point in having one.

MysteriousQuinn · 23/08/2018 18:22

Not at 38 weeks. IME It's only if you go overdue or if your having a slow pre labour. Plus they ask they don't just say "right knickers off let's get sweepin" Grin
Tell your DD not to worry. My advice would actually be to refuse tbh. I think I've had about 4 sweeps with my 2 Dc's and they are pretty unpleasant and do sod all.

MrsA6 · 23/08/2018 18:28

I had one at 40+2 (planned in at previous appt). It worked for me (went into labour overnight) but was really, really uncomfortable and unpleasant. I was expecting the smear test kind of pain but was much worse.

FrancesHaHa · 23/08/2018 18:32

I had 3. But all on or past due date and they were optional.

LucyLou19 · 23/08/2018 18:34

No on her due date or over xx

Thanks everyone, for your replies Flowers

Things have changed so much since I had her & my others, I wasn't sure how to advise her xo
