Kicking, position... confused

Am a first-time mum-to-be and am probably worrying unnecessarily.

I feel baby kick on right side about 90% of the time, with the occasional prod on my left side. Does this mean the baby is lying transverse? I'm 28 weeks. Was told my placenta was low-lying at 20 week scan so will be scanned again at 35 weeks. Would love a homebirth but obviously if placenta doesn't shift it'll be an elective c-section.

Typically, at 28 weeks should I be able to feel kicks all over the place? I read that baby lying transverse can be a sign of placenta praevia. Would my midwife be able to find out the baby's position by feeling my tummy at this stage?

Forgive my naivety!

I'm afraid I don't know any technicalities about your situation, but I can tell you from personal experience that it can be really difficult to work out your baby's position from the 'kicks'.
What feel like kicks can actually be from fists, knees or elbows and it's almost impossible to work out which.
Certainly the scan will show the baby's position, but you'll probably find that your MW will have a pretty good idea too.
Don't apologise for being naive.
I hope it all works out, but try not to worry too much and stress yourself out.

hi naturelover,

yes, your MW will be able to tell the position of your baby. with their experienced hands they can tell where the head is, and figure out the rest.

my baby is upside down, her back to my right side and free legs on the left side. i know that from MW + scan. therefore, when im laying on my left side, she paddles away and its almost like i can feel her little feet on my mattress or sofa!

as ruth said, what you feel might not be the feet... and if it is, it could be exactly in the same position my baby is, which is not transverse.

im 32 weeks now and i think quite often of the baby position, delivery, etc... too.

what does it say in your notes re the lie of the baby?

Tinkjon · 05/06/2007 12:25

I'm afraid I have no idea about that, but I do know that the baby can still change position at that stage - so even if it were transverse/breech/whatever, there is still plenty of time for it to change before your due date anyway. HTH!

I will check my notes tonight at home, and will ask midwife to have a feel at my appt later this week. Thanks for your replies.
