Are you buying wrap over vests for newborn?

When DC1 was born two years ago I was advised to buy these vests to use initially:

www.mothercare.com/vests/my-first-short-sleeve-wrap-vests-%E2%80%93-2-pack/LKA033.html

At the time I thought they were great, especially for the first few times we hesitated dressing DS, and while the cord wound was so fresh they helped the air circulate a bit more.

I'm 35 weeks pregnant with DC2 and just buying some newborn bits. Bought loads of normal style baby vests and suddenly remembered about these ones. I'm wondering does everyone but these wrap vests or is is more common to just wear the normal ones straightaway? (Especially now this time round I know the shoulder envelope means they can be put on without pulling over baby's head!).

I've not seen these before, nor heard mum friends talk about these.

What do you mean the shoulder envelope means you don't have to pull it over the head?? Have I missed the biggest baby hack?

I liked the H&M wrap vests for winter as it's a double layer on the front - I wouldn't use them any other season though as I'd be worried about overheating.

LutherRalph1 · 23/08/2018 14:53

I used the normal ones straight away

Yes envelope shoulders mean vests can be pulled down over babies body rather than up - especially if there has been a poo explosion

I never used the envelope shoulder thing wo rked fine. When there was a poo explosin just take it off down their body instead of over the head

I had sone of these. I loved them but they were from France and I didn't realise you could get them here because I had never seen them here.

That is the envelope shoulder thing; the necks of the vests are designed with folds that open up like an envelope to enable you to do this. Otherwise they wouldn't fit over the baby's shoulders.

@coffeeforone the wrapover vests are great and make life easy but normal vests are also fine.

Thanks all!

Just looking at the H&M ones, they look great - I just wish they were short sleeved as I wouldn't buy long sleeved ones to wear with a sleep suit over the top!

I loved wrap vests with my newborn as she hated having clothes pulled over her head so it prevented a lot of yelling at changing times. I didn't get any more past about 6 months as she was fine with normal vests, but I would definitely get more for the next one.

We love the little first vests! DD (summer baby) has the exact same ones. DM got some before DD came along, saying that they were a little old fashioned now, but that she had used them with me (also a summer baby) and they were brilliant! We used them with just a nappy when very hot, or as a light cardi. Have gone on to buy them in every size they do, and DD still wears them (they take dye well). We also used wrap around body suits (long and short sleeved), as we found them easier at first. Lidl have their 100% organic cotton ones in about twice a year in their baby events, and these Amazon ones are great too. www.amazon.co.uk/Twins-Wrap-Around-Shortsleeve-Multicoloured-Manufacturer/dp/B00V4COJBE/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ref=plSrch&keywords=wraparound+bodysuit+baby&dpPl=1&dpID=41cY4posyJL&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1535034352&sr=8-3

Sorry @bottledsunshine my kindle seems to hate MN posts and autocorrects everything wrong. That should have read "i never used them. The envelope shoulder thing....." Referring to not using wrap vests. Sodding kindle.

I love the wrap over ones from H&M. They do long and short sleeved but maybe only in season?

They’re so much kinder on their bellybuttons and it avoids the drama of pulling something over their head, although I also pull up envelope vests from the bottom to top.

BottledSunshine · 24/08/2018 10:02

@Katescurios ah oh, that makes sense! Smile

helvetica01 · 24/08/2018 12:45

It's never occurred to me that the envelope tops can be pulled down over their bodies! Though just tried and got a bit stuck with my 90th centile mega baby... 🐖

H&M do short sleeved ones, maybe they're just not in stock right now -
Vertbaudet and Petit Bateau (and probably other French brands) definitely do them too as I remember the French hospital where my nephew was born (like my Italian one) specifiying this style only for newborns.
