Im 38+2 and baby is lying on my right side. Midwife said he needs to be on the left. Is there a reason he needs to be on the left? Will is cause and problems with labour or delivery?

Have a look at a website called spinning babies. My dd1 turned sideways during labour having been in correct position for weeks!

Hi OP,

It's not necessarily bad that the baby's on the right, but the optimal position for a baby to be lying in towards the end of pregnancy is head down on the left hand side. I think it's something to do with the head putting pressure on the cervix to get things going, and it's then the best way for baby to enter the birth canal. If on the right hand side, baby may turn during labour and go 'back to back' which can be painful and make things progress more slowly.

Second a pp's advice - worth checking out the spinning babies website. Lots of advice on there about how to get baby into a 'good' position. Time on hands and knees helps, I think, as does sitting on a gym ball.

He doesn’t “need” to be on the left but as a PP has said, it’s the optimum position.

In labour the baby corkscrews downwards through the birth canal in a clockwise direction, so if he’s lying on the right he has a bigger rotation to make (270deg) than if he’s lying on the left (90deg) in order to come out facing the right way.

DD2 was on the right the whole time but I had a really easy delivery and she came out the right way round as far as I know!
