Leeds hospitals - SJUH v LGI

Hello

I'm currently scheduled to give birth at SJUH, and have had all of my scans there so far - all of which have been fantastic and the staff have been lovely.

I'm just starting to worry now (typical me) that the LGI is a better option, but I can only find old threads on here and just wanted to hear from anyone who has had a more recent experience with either hospital.

Thanks!

I had my baby at SJUH and that was many years ago so can't comment what it's like now. The parking is considerably better at SJUH!

I’ve not given birth yet (30+2) but have chosen to go for LGI. Admittedly the parking is better at Jimmy’s but just from the visitor point of view in the maternity wards, I personally much preferred LGI’s. LGI also works much better for me with antenatal appointments as I work in the centre and I find Jimmy’s is awkward to get to unless you have a car (and I wouldn’t ever want to drive in the centre!)

I remember way back for my booking appointment looking at the ratings for the two (and Pinderfields just going on where I actually live) on NHS choices and there wasn’t much in it on the ‘star’ rating. They are lead by the same trust too so you’d hope you’d get similar standards of care regardless of where you labour Smile

My nurse friend (who works at both) recommended LGI as it has a neonatal team on site. But obviously as a healthcare professional she is highly risk averse.

Another close friend has had a baby at each and said both were absolutely fine.

There is a neonatal unit at both hospitals.

I had originally wanted LGI but after DH missed my 12 week scan due to not been able to park, we opted for St James. When I was in labour St James maternity unit was full and had closed so I had to go to the LGI. The team at LGI were fantastic during a very long and difficult birth, the parking is horrendous though and my parents had to drop us off. That was 2 years ago. I'm due another baby in November and have opted again for St James but only because the parking is much better. If parking wasn't a issue for us I would definitely of preferred the LGI again.

I had my first baby at LGI 3 years ago, I had a mostly positive experience. I mainly chose LGI due to the location, and I've chosen LGI again for this pregnancy. I agree parking is definitely an issue at LGI but other than that, I feel they are both fairly comparable. I was also told there is a chance that LGI wouldn't have space for me (didn't happen, but they like to prepare you) and I could've ended up at SJUH anyway.

Thank you to you all for sharing your thoughts - I think we’ll stick with SJUH parking wise and like you say they work pretty closely together so could end up at either anyway! Xx
