Second hand cot

Hi all,
I'm currently trying to buy a second hand Chico next to me crib although it will actually only save me between £20-40 depending on how much I get one for but every penny helps!
Is it recommended that we buy a new mattress for it even if it comes with one? I would definitely buy new sheets but just wondered about the mattress. Please excuse my naivety! Thanks all.

Yes definitely a new mattress

Midwife said to me that second hand cot is fine as long as you definitely make sure to have a new mattress (we personally have bought a new one with mattress included as it was the cheaper option once we considered the price of the new mattress!)

Yes you need new mattress x

Second hand mattresses are believed to be a SIDS risk

Might be worth calling Chicco and seeing how much a new mattress is, you could get a brand new next to me for £150

Definitely a new mattress because of SIDS risk associated with second hand mattress. I nearly went for a Chico but in the end got a Jane Babyside crib which is essentially the same but was cheaper. It had the zip down side, tilt option (never used this as it happened), height adjustment and legs moved in so it fit snug against our divan bed. Have you checked out Gumtree or Shpock? They seem to sell cheaper on there. I think you’re sensible to get a second hand one I really regret getting a new one. At 5 months it was out grown and there was a lot of co-sleeping anyway. I learnt my lesson and got my cotbed second hand! Happy hunting!

A new mattress will likely cost more than £20 or £40. They aren’t a standard size.

I bought this one and it fits perfectly.

Thanks for your responses. I have just won one on eBay. I have also seen mattresses on £20 on Amazon so still a saving!
