Hey all!

I’m pregnant with my first - currently 8 weeks 4 days..

I have been researching Probably too much and.l didn’t even realise a missed miscarriage was a thing. I now feel worried and dreading the 12 week scan Confused can anyone shed light on this as whenever you google it - it seems so common!!! Does anyone know statistics or how common this is?!

Sending love Smile

It isn't common. People are all just more likely to write about their bad experiences than when everything goes to plan.

Please try to stop reading and stop worrying. I know that's easier said than done. But it helps no one, just scares you. I've been there as an avid googler and worrier in my early pregnancy!

SpottingTheZebras · 15/08/2018 12:01

I’ve had one. My 12 week scan was fine. I went for a private scan a few weeks later and the baby had died but I had no idea.

I think in general the only reason they seem to be more common is because lots of people now have early scans whereas usually they would have had bleeding and signs of a miscarriage by the time of their first scan, at 12 weeks. My second miscarriage would probably have shown as a missed miscarriage if I had had a scan at eight weeks as I only started bleeding when I was almost 10 weeks but from blood tests it was apparent my hcg levels had been falling for a long time.

Hi, congrats on your pregnancy!

From what I've read MMC is relatively uncommon (1 in a 100 pregnancies).

I have unfortunately had one myself. I was supposed to be 12 weeks but a scan revealed an empty sac. I had no bleeding or pain. I'd never heard of MMC until I'd had one myself.

However, I am now 10 weeks pregnant with a healthy baby. Had a scan yesterday and baby was kicking and flipping away on the screen Grin I cannot guarantee that everything is okay and that you won't have a MMC, however you can arrange to have early reassurance scans. I've had three myself (think I'm slightly addicted Grin) and have found them massively reassuring.

The odds are massively in your favour! Good luck xx

And yes, it does appear to be overrepresented on forums such as these because you are far more likely to write about a bad experience than you are about a perfectly boring, normal pregnancy. But like I said, they are pretty uncommon in reality and the odds are in your favour that everything is fine.

It is rare, about 2% of miscarriages will be missed miscarriages. Most miscarriages are spontaneous and happen in the first 12 weeks (the majority are actually in the first 8 weeks).

I had two last year, sadly but I was an absolute anomaly because the chance of two is very slim. I am now 28+3 with a healthy baby though Smile.

I also am super paranoid about this, I've been sat reading about it all afternoon and I really wish I hadn't! I'm convincing myself my symptoms have gone...🙁

CobaltRose · 15/08/2018 14:06

@caitlinn, I was worrying because my symptoms had been improving over the past few days. Like I said, I had a scan yesterday and peanut was fine Smile Also, my nausea has returned with a vengeance today... be careful what you wish for Grin

caitlinn · 15/08/2018 14:16

@cobaltrose that's my issue, my symptoms have improved, my boobs aren't as sore, I've not been sick or queasy in days, I've had a dull heavy sort of feeling and that's it....I'd like to think I'm being daft but I don't think I'll calm down until after my scan next week....

TeacupTattoo · 15/08/2018 14:17

It's uncommon but that doesn't help when it happens to you. I had a Mmc in 2016, 12 week scan was fine but very soon after it all went wrong. They somehow seem so poignant as your body is still trying to do everything g right and stay pregnant.
All I can suggest is you try to look at the statistics - it is much much more likely everything is fine.
Btw I had a daughter in 2017 and am pregnant again. Smile

Flatwhite32 · 15/08/2018 14:22

I had one discovered at the 12 week scan, but they are rare. I know people who have had miscarriages, but I don't personally know anyone in my family or friendship group who has had a MMC discovered at a scan. It was a year ago next week, but I'm now a mummy to a 3 week old baby girl who is my world! I even had a bleed when pregnant with her and all turned out fine! Chances are everything will be fine with your pregnancy Smile.

caitlinn · 15/08/2018 14:25

Does anyone actually know proper statistics? I've looked everywhere and can't find any

Flatwhite32 · 15/08/2018 14:45

@caitlinn I was told 2% by the consultant I saw after my MMC. 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage, but MMC is much rarer.

SpottingTheZebras · 15/08/2018 19:40

I still have symptoms after my baby had died and they were much stronger than at times during subsequent pregnancies when everything was fine. However, I had a constant low down ache that didn’t go away and I just knew with certainly that something had happened. With other pregnancies I was worried but I never had that certainty feeling again.
