Iron deficiency

I think I might be anemic. I’m 19 weeks pregnancy and I’m exhausted all the time, not just in a tired way but physically feel exhausted. This pregnancy isn’t a particularly difficult one so far, but I’ve been experiencing dizziness for the last 4 weeks, feeling sick, breathless when I walk upstairs/uphill, and just so physically tired. My legs feel like lead most of the time. It’s awful I’m normally so fit and active and I can barely get off the sofa most days.

I told my midwife at my 16 week appt and she said my blood pressure is fine, and that my iron level at the 10 week appt was actually really high so to leave it a few weeks and see if it’s gotten better - it hasn’t. However, I have been slightly deficient before pregnancy and normally eat a lot of green leafy veg to compensate. I’m doing that now, but I also have IBS so I’m a bit concerned I’m not absorbing it. So - anyone actually diagnosed with iron deficiency who knows what it feels like in the second trimester?

Make an emergency on the day appointment with your GP and say you think you are anaemic again. Your GP has your full medical records from birth unlike your midwife, so will know if you have had problems with your iron levels or any other medical issue. If it is your first pregnancy in some areas they make you see your GP at certain weeks for antenatal care.

hello OP, I'm 22 weeks, and was told just at 20 weeks that I'm anemic, I keep getting told you're suppose to feel "miles better" in your second trimester, and I still haven't gotten to that point, so I'm guessing that's because of the iron deficiency. I definitely feel drained all of the time, I can have a twelve hour sleep and still want to go back to bed!! I also get breathless super easy too. but I'm not sure, I got given ferrous fumarate to take to help, and i've been on them for two weeks and nothing has improved, maybe some pregnancies are just more hard worth than others!! id speak to your gp and have more bloods to to check tho, they only spotted mine after my 16 weeks blood test...hope everything's okay for you FlowersSmile

I’ve been to the GP today and I’m booked in for a blood test tomorrow to check iron levels and my thyroid, hopefully it’s just tiredness but better to be safe!
