Fever and illness in pregnancy

I'm 31 weeks pregnant.

Tonight I have come over really unwell. I feel really sick, dizzy and out of it, am sweaty and shaking with cold. I can't sleep. Have a fever of 38.9 that currently doesn't seem to be being touched by paracetamol.

I saw my midwife this afternoon and baby, urine, bloods, blood pressure etc were all fine. However I wasn't feeling unwell then.

Do I assume at this stage I've got a bug of some kind, try and sleep it off and treat with paracetamol? Or is a fever dangerous in pregnancy and therefore should I call triage? I've found conflicting things online.

I would call but then I’m a massive worrier with this sort of thing.

I would call too, it's hot enough without having a temperature to boot.

Call triage now. Why wouldn't you? If you're concerned enough to post on mumsnet about a legitimate health problem during pregnancy, then you meet the threshold for calling and asking professional guidance. The appointment earlier today is irrelevant as you weren't sick then. V unusual for paracetamol not to reduce a fever so I'd definitely seek medical advice - either call or present yourself in person if you feel a good deal worse. Those symptoms could mean a whole load of things in pregnancy. Don't wait around here. Ring the right people and get their view.

Best wishes.

Id give triage a call for reassurance. Keep up the paracetamol - correct dosage and spacing of course and have plenty of fluids as well.

Call - I had this at 30 weeks and they took it very seriously. They will check you for infection. I was kept in for 3 days until they were happy I could maintain my temp. When I rang, they said any temp over 38 they def need to see. Never did find the cause of mine so assume just a virus.

BarryTheKestrel · 07/08/2018 08:48

I called. They said to take my next dose of paracetamol and see how that went. I took it and managed to sleep for a few hours. I woke up and my temperature seems to have sorted itself out luckily.

They said to go in if my temperature was still high an hour after the next dose.

I'm still not feeling great so I'm keeping on top of it and will call them again if it spikes and won't come down.

Thank you all.

Hope you feel better soon! It’s no fun in this heat.

I had something like this at 31 weeks pregnant. I kept trying to ignore it and just take paracetamol. If your temp keeps spiking please go in. I felt ill for 2 days and within 3 minutes of going in to hospital to be checked out I was on a drip and stuck there for a week. So if you can't control it go in sooner before you get too ill. Hope you feel better soon

My temperature seems to be totally under control and normal now. However now heartburn has struck, just to make me even more uncomfortable than I already am! Sad

Urgh. I feel your pain. I’m making Alien look pH neutral just now...

Sympathies. I know I’m lucky to be pregnant and all but the entire nine months has been utterly shite. We joke that ds1 is 66% rennie.

Try a shrew ;) I hear they help for kestrel indigestion...
