Can they miss twins at 7 week vaginal scan?

Hi,

Wondering if anyone can shed any light on this situation. I had a misscarriage with twins a few months ago, both were around 10 weeks when they passed away. I recently got pregnant again and due to severe sickness throughout the whole day and just tiredness and nausea all the time they referred me for an early scan. I went to the scan and the lady can see one baby with a heart beat around 7 weeks and 1 day. She then noticed a bleed which she said could have possibly been a twin. Could the other one have been missed or is there definitely going to only be one? Just don't know whether to request another scan. Me and my partner really had a feeling we was due to the amount of sickness. My first pregnancy with my little boy was perfect, no sickness at all. With the twins I felt exactly the same as this time so it just doesn't feel right that there's only one?

I've also attached a picture of my scan to see if anyone can relate.
Thankyou Smile

Hi OP, looking at your scan picture, I'd say there is only one baby in there.

I'm also so so sorry to hear about your twins! Thanks xx

I'm sure they can because I had a 7 week internal scan and they missed seeing my single child and didn't see anything until 9 weeks.

@myotherbagisgucci Thankyou lovely, and ok thankyou, the grey area is the bleed the lady said but I just wasn't sure if it's Possible to miss one xx

@brizzledrizzle oh god!! How did they not see a baby? I don't feel like the lady really had a good look around. Was almost just in and out :/

Weirdly someone I know had this happen just recently. She had two early scans at 6 weeks and 8 weeks and only one baby visible. At her 12 week scan she got one hell of a shock to find out there were two in there! Someone suggested baby 2 might have been hidden behind baby 1, but I've no idea. I don't think it's common but it does seem possible when everything is so small.

Too small apparently.

@Celebelly did they have no signs what so ever on the scan that there was twins?

Yes, that can and did happen to me. Twin 2 totally not visible at 7 week internal scan. Sadly stopped growing at about 10 weeks but clearly visible at 12 week scan.
