Had an early pregnancy scan today, can you help me work something out?

Hi,

Had a scan at EPU today. They saw a pregnancy sac and yolk sac. Now, my period was on 18th June, but it was a failed IVF bleed, not a normal period (This is a natural, miracle pregnancy) I don’t always ovulate, but when I do it’s late (day 20/21ish)

Anyway, I was supposed to be abstaining from sex or using a barrier method as was starting a new IVF cycle this month. We ended up having unprotected sex on 6th and 7th July and somehow i’ve ended up pregnant! As thrilled as I am, i’m worried that there was no fetal pole. If I has sex on 7th July, shouldn’t there be a fetal pole by now? Or could I have ovulated later and the sperm has survived?

At what point in pregnancy would you only see a pregnancy and yolk sac?

You could have ovulated a few days after sex and then taken a while to implant so to see just a yolk sac might not be unexpected really. When are you due to go back?

Thanks for your reply. Not sure if it’s relevant but my Clearblue didn’t go to 3+ until Monday, so maybe i’m only 5+4? They didn’t seem concerned at all and have booked me back in for 2 weeks today, although i’ve gone and booked a private scan for next Saturday morning. Hoping i’ll see a fetal pole by then.

Yes- that makes sense with the clearblue timing. Hcg levels tend to correlate closely with what’s seen on a scan and there’s a range of normal so if your hcg rise is on the slightly slower side (but still within rage) a couple of days might make a big difference on a scan.

Well I must have had a hcg reading of 2,600 on Monday to see 3+ so I assume hcg should be approx 10,400 at a minimum by now. Do you think this is slightly too low to see fetal pole?

Had my hcg levels checked last week and it went up by 144% over 48 hours.

Hi villagefete. I'm in the same boat as you! I had ivf last year and now am pregnant with a natural miracle. I am 8w3d today. I had an early scan at 6w and saw the pole but even then they said it wouldn't be unusual not to that early. So if you're 5w4d then it's not unusual they didn't see it. And your hcg seems to be doing well so I'd try not to worry. Easier said than done...I know!

Congratulations @bluebird3 It’s such a special pregnancy after all the suffering isn’t it?

I am just guessing at dates to be honest, but we only had unprotected sex on 7th July (day 20 of my cycle) So i’m basing it on that.

Hi @VillageFete. I had a bleed at exactly 6 weeks pregnant, and having had a previous MMC, I was convinced I was miscarrying again. I was given a scan at EPU where they dated me a week behind as they could only see a gestational sac and yolk sac with no foetal pole. I honestly thought that was it. I went back 2 weeks later and they saw an embryo with a heartbeat! My 12 day old baby girl is currently having a snooze!

Thanks @Flatwhite32 So you think it’s probably just a little too early to see fetal pole and I don’t need to panic? I reckon I must be around 5+4 but I thought I was 5+6

@VillageFete I could have written your post! Had a failed IVf in June with a bleed on 23rd. Found out last sat im pregnant. After two years of trying it's happened naturally! I'm still in shock.

I've booked in for an early scan next week, but I'm in the same boat as you. No idea when I ovulated as wasn't tracking it.

If you have booked another scan, please ensure they do an internal one. I was unsure of my dates and sonographer did a normal scan. She pushed so hard tryint to get an image that she caused a haematoma and I nearly lost my baby. I was on bed rest for months.

Oh that’s awful What a horrific thing to go through. Actually, that lady at the private clinic said they’d try normal scan first, then if they couldn’t make anything out they’d do an internal. I’m going to ring up and tell them I only want internal.

I think so @VillageFete. I was 6 weeks and they couldn't see a fetal pole (which is why they dated me behind, even though I was so sure of my dates!). By the time I had my scan at 8 weeks, my dates had caught up again though.
