Hoping for some reassurance! Have been for a private scan today at 7 weeks as I’ve been spotting a little. It was an abdominal scan and they couldn’t see anything at all. Told me I’d either got the dates wrong or miscarried early but havent had any symptoms. Anyone else in this situation? Don’t really know where to go from here I guess an appt with the dr next week

Didn't want to read and run xx Hope it all is OK- is there any chance you can get an appointment Monday? x

Beherenow32 · 28/07/2018 17:00

@pineapple1989 not in the same situation, but I had a 7 week scan, and it was internal...

Maybe too soon to see anything through an abdominal scan?! Hope all is ok xx

You probably need to speak to your GP and see if they can refer you to the EPU. They will likely do an internal scan which is more accurate that early. However at 7 weeks they can usually see something with an abdominal scan. If not the baby clearly then they can often see the gestational sac. Sorry it's such a confusing and worrying time for you Thanks

Goatlady5812 · 28/07/2018 17:20

I had a few early scans- no idea on dates however what I know now is at 4 weeks nothing there - 5 weeks 4 days an empty sac. 6 weeks baby with a tiny heartbeat. It might well be that your dates are out and they will want to rescan you in a week or so however I agree with an earlier poster if you have an epu give them a call- usually you can self refer and internal scans are meant to be able to see much more. Are you certain of your dates? I’m so sorry you are in this position as I felt truly terrible when there was nothing there. Was there a sac at all? I have everything crossed for you and really hope you get the answers you need. Xxxx

Hey i was in this situation last year, I am afraid it didn't end well, i naturally miscarried at 9 weeks, I hope yours don't end like mine did

MakeLemonade · 28/07/2018 17:31

Did they not offer a vaginal scan?

I had a scan at 9weeks and I’d not been able to drink hardly any water due to sickness (also have a bit of a chubby belly!) and they couldn’t see very well at all from the first attempt at abdo scanning. And that was at 9 weeks so much further along in terms of baby size given how quickly they grown in the early days.

I agree that an EPU referral is your best next step. When did you get a positive pregnancy test?

pineapple1989 · 28/07/2018 17:57

Thanks everyone. I had a positive pregnancy test first day of my missed period and have done a couple of others all have been positive. Did one today that was positive too. I wasn’t offered an internal I’m not sure they did them at the place. I wasn’t aware of an early pregnancy unit so I will investigate this thanks. Fingers crossed but not feeling hopeful

Hi im in the same situation, i think im about 6 to 7 weeks pregnant. I had some spotting a few days ago so went to get checked out they couldnt see a baby and called it a PUL they took my bloods and they are rising not as much as they would of hoped. Im back tomorrow for another scan.

rosetintedview · 29/07/2018 15:25

I would say find the number for your local EPU and give them a call - some let you self-refer, but even if they don't they'll tell you how to get a referral. Good luck ❤️

FrowningFlamingo · 29/07/2018 21:22

This makes me so cross. They have a duty of care to tell you exactly what to do next. I briefly worked in an EPU and some of the private providers are awful. Contact your GP for advice tomorrow. Fingers crossed it's all fine for you.

NuclearPenguin · 29/07/2018 22:05

I am surprised they would scan at 7 weeks without the ability to do an internal as I would think it quite likely that they might not see anything externally that early.

Definitely contact your EPU you will probably be able to find the number online if you know where your local maternity unit is. I had a similar situation last year whereby a private early scan (internal) showed me to not be as far along as I should have been for my dates. Had a follow up scan at my EPU and 12 months later the little heartbeat seen then is now asleep in his cot.

Fingers crossed for good news for you xx

It was 20 years ago but I had a similar thing. I had an early scan and was told that there was no sign of a baby, just a sac. I had to return a week later for an internal scan and it transpired that my dates were wrong. My allegedly non existent baby got married last Saturday.

pineapple1989 · 01/08/2018 10:17

Thanks everyone for the words of wisdom. I had an internal scan at the EPU which confirmed I have I fact had a miscarriage. I’m glad that I know one way or another and hopefully a successful pregnancy will happen for me soon

Sorry op, that's rubbish news ☹️. Hope you're being looked after

Beherenow32 · 01/08/2018 12:40

Very sorry @pineapple1989 xx

sirmione16 · 01/08/2018 12:44

I was in this position, tests can still say positive as your hormone levels may still rise - your body thinking it's still pregnant when is not. Track the spotting, keep a note of how heavy and how often it is. For me they saw a sac but no baby at 7 and this meant for me it was a mc. It's a horrible thing to go through, a lot of this time is waiting - waiting for results, waiting for developments in your own body, waiting for tests... stay strong, I hope you have lots of support for you and I wish you the best outcome possible x
