Hand Foot and Mouth Virus and Pregnancy and Nursery

I have been informed by DS' nursery that there have been a couple of cases of hand, foot and mouth disease in the room where DS is.

DS only attends all day weds and 1/2 day thurs so his exposure to the virus will be limited.

According to NHS direct the virus could cause problems if caught by me in the 'later stage of pregnancy' (I am 31 wks).

I am a bit worried and am not sure if I should send DS to nursery for his 1/2 day tomorrow. I don't want to risk me catching it and causing complications for my baby when born.

Can anyone offer any advice? Should I keep DS off nursery for a while? Am I being neurotic?

Sorry for the ramble.....

Keep him off nursery!!! It's just not worth the risk!!

That is what I was thinking - I wish nursery had mentioned it to me this morning when I dropped DS off. They know I am pregnant.

Keep him off nursery.
It is a nasty virus,my dd1 had it last summer, but oddly children don't have to be kept off school

It isn't very nice but GP told me it is extremely rare in adults because they have usually built up immunity. DS got it at nursery but neither DH or I caught it from him.

Thanks everyone, it sounds like a horrible illness. I was still unsure what to do so I rang my midwife who checked with microbiology (or something like that) and they say that there is no risk of birth defects from this virus so I don't need to avoid it, and that I should send DS in to nursery to build up his immunity.

Hi, my DS caught this when I was 26wks pregnant (am now 32 wks) and I checked with anyone who would listen and there was no risk to me at all. It is a nasty illness and DS was probably off colour and out of nursery for just over a week, but at least he's had it now!

Well I have sent him in to nursery this afternoon - there is no guarantee that he hasn't already picked up the virus anyway. We will just have to wait and see!

I was more worried about how it might affect my bump than about DS getting it. I would rather DS built up his immune system now than to be all sickly at school

Hello.
I work in a nursery and we have a few cases of hand, foot and mouth going round. They children as still allowed in. I was just wondering if it was safe for me to be around them. I am 28weeks pregnant ?

Ds had it while I was 6 weeks pregnant and neither myself or dh caught it from him. Was pretty miserable for him while he had it though!
