Question about sweeps..

So I went into triage for reduced movement on I think Tuesday.. before I left the doctor gave me a sweep. I was already 2cm dilated, anterior and soft.
It hasn't done much other than cause a bloody show then chunks of plug loss since. But I want to know of my midwife will give me another if I ask her at my next appointment (38+2) on Tuesday. Or will she stick to the NICE guideline and not do until 40/42 weeks??

I'm hoping she will, I had my last child at 38+1, contractions started after a sweep once my waters had broke.

Here to hoping I'll have my baby soon!

(Bishops score currently a 7. Baby efw 6lbs14oz taken today only 1oz off previous baby birth weight)

As far as I know own sweeps are pretty pointless unless you are on the cusp of labour anyway, in which case they are also pointless then...

LittleBirdBlues · 21/07/2018 19:58

Can I ask why you are keen to get labour started den though you are still a few weeks away from your due date? Genuine question Wink

I had a sweep this morning at 39+6, also went in for reduced movements, but I'm quite keen to wait until things get going naturally (they wanted to induce).

I went in for reduced movements with my second and had a sweep which seemed to actually kick off the labour as I was then having contractions from that evening. I did end up having to have my waters broken as they wanted to speed things up but I do think I would still have given birth pretty soon even if they hadnt done that. And I did avoid having to have any further induction.

I would think she would certainly give you another as they will want to get the baby out asap if you have already had one because of the infection risk?

I went in for reduced movements with my ds and consultant tried a sweep. I was already 2cm dilated and soft. Started contracting that night and lost rest of my plug. I didn't give birth until nearly 2 weeks later when they broke my waters because my contractions were stopping and starting.

I want to get labour started as the doctor seemed fairly confident that the sweep would get things going, if it wasn't safe im sure she wouldn't have even suggested it.
I'm not too fussed about waiting a bit longer but I have severe anxiety and the littlest things (movements, bloody show and plug loss) are playing on my mind. And I'm absolutely impatient.

After have my ds at 38 weeks if I was to go over it would feel like an eternity longer!!
I will atleast ask her to give me an internal examination to see if my cervix has changed any and is she refuses to sweep that's absolutely fine.

I'm happy either way aslong as my baby is healthy... But I do feel pressed for time I'm not sure why..my panic anxiety probably!

As a midwife, I'd say she won't sweep you at 38 weeks unless the Dr has specifically written for a repeat sweep at that gestation. There's also no indication for her to examine you at all, that's just increasing risk of infection with no benefit

I went in at 37 weeks with reduced movements and they gave me a sweep, the midwife was sure I'd have my DD within a few days, but I went to 40+5 and wasn't offered another sweep until 40 weeks despite going in at 39 again with reduced movements

Hjkillas · 21/07/2018 22:46

Okay thanks for your replies. If there are no more sweeps on the cards until I'm overdue I'm absolutely fine with that!
Wonder if I'll have a spontaneous rupture of membranes this time or if I'll start with contractions. Time will tell! 😉
