Hi all! My doctor told me to start taking 75g of aspirin at night. Just pop to the pharnacy and get some he said. Soooo easy. So off i go to boots only to be told that i cant have the over the counter aspirin, i need a prescription for the pregnancy safe aspirin behind the counter...

Anyone else taking aspirin - what brand are you taking and did you get it behind or over the counter?

I am. I either get mine over the counter from Sainsbury's (no-one has ever questioned it) or my local Asda has 75mg tablets on the shelf. I've never needed a prescription.

GP told me to get 75mg over the counter

Cbeebiessavesmyafternoon · 19/07/2018 06:53

I bought some 150mg ones on the shelf at Sainsburys and halved them.

doleritedinosaur · 19/07/2018 06:55

Savers have them, 75mg in packs of 28.
That Boots pharmacist seems to want to cost the NHS a stupid amount of money for a pack of aspirin that is about 80p.

Fatted · 19/07/2018 06:55

I thought they were doing away with prescriptions for things that you can buy yourself over the counter. It costs the NHS too much money.

I had to take it. Cos of my age or cos I'm overweight or cos of my blood pressure. Can't quite remember now. I just got cheap stuff 3 boxes for £1 from pound land. No one questions you there!

DwangelaForever · 19/07/2018 06:59

Buy it from Tesco it's 32p and saves the NHS paying extortionate prices for it. It's not recommended you take higher doses during pregnancy that's prob why the chemist wouldn't sell you it.

DwangelaForever · 19/07/2018 07:00

@Cbeebiessavesmyafternoon I wouldn't trust halving them! Tesco deffo sell the 75mg ones

TurtleTree · 19/07/2018 07:10

I've been buying my 75mg from boots with no issues at all. They just ask if I've been told by a doctor to take them, and I say yes, no prescription or note needed. Maybe try again and see if you get someone else?

Sugarskulllover · 19/07/2018 07:12

My consultant gave me a prescription for it! I told her there was no way I was going to put it through when it costs less than £1 a box. She kept telling me how it's free with the maternity exception card but i told her it was a waste of money to the NHS. I've been able to get it over to counter at boots, although she did ask me a lot of questions before she'd let me have it.

Thank you all, that is super helpful! It’s so easy to start obsessing about conflicting medical advice, but feels right to trust my doctor and your sage advice!

Here's the aspirin I was prescribed at 14 weeks, on sale in Boots.

I got mine off the shelf at Asda at first. It's now on prescription (consultant wants me to take it until at least 28 weeks when I may go onto clexane as well).

lrwe · 19/07/2018 08:30

I got 75mg over the counter from Sainsburys - you have to go and ask for it!

BlueBug45 · 19/07/2018 08:58

My aspirin is on repeat prescription as I was warned that some pharmacists won't let you buy it from behind the counter when they realise you are pregnant. However so far I've paid for half of it myself as my prescription wasn't ready the last time and the pharmacist knew I had it on repeat.

StrugglingMumma · 19/07/2018 09:01

Unusual that your having trouble getting it, it's cheaper to buy over the counter than a prescription charge.

Try another pharmacy

flumpybear · 19/07/2018 09:47

I just broke mine into quarters so bought the cheap stuff off the shelf 300mg in Asda etc

Thegirlhasnoname · 19/07/2018 10:04

The cheapest 75mg ones I have found is in Wilko :)

BlueBug45 · 19/07/2018 14:52

@StrugglingMumma both the booking midwife and the GP I saw said that some pharmacists will refuse to give it to you if they realise you are pregnant.

Also it is free of you are pregnant as you are exempt from prescription charges.

StrugglingMumma · 19/07/2018 22:52

@BlueBug45 I'm well aware it's free when pregnant due to exception certificates. I have also had to take it during pregnancy but our struggling Nhs still have to pick up the cost of it

JoJoyorker · 19/07/2018 22:56

The consultant told me to get it off the shelf. Wilkinson's have the 75mg ones on the shelf and are really cheap. Before that I had been taking the 300g and breaking it into 4 but the consultant said I really shouldn't be doing that as the active ingredient wouldn't be evenly spread in the tablet!

Mhcb · 19/07/2018 22:59

I got my easily from the boots pharmacy. My GP was happy to recommend where to get it from. I even bought my folic acid and my vitamins as I didn't want to waste the nhs money instead can be used for those who cannot afford

Kintan · 19/07/2018 23:04

Mhcb did you get a prescription for folic acid and vitamins? I had no idea people didn’t just buy them themselves! That is a crazy waste of NHS money (unless it’s a special dose of folic acid or something).

Mhcb · 20/07/2018 00:14

They gave me one but I never handed it in. I bought my folic acid myself only 1 quid in Tesco and bought the aspirin myself via boots pharmacy the pharmacist was very helpful in ensuring I got the 75mg and dispersable like the prescription stated only 1.59 for 90 tablets. The vitamins again just bought in Tesco.

I have always bought myself. I guess not everyone is able to do so and I won't judge then for that.
