At how many weeks does the mw first listen in to baby’s heartbeat? I’ve got mw appointment tomorrow at 16w and wondering if she’ll listen

Normally the 16 week appointment is when they first listen to baby's heartbeat Smile

birdybirdbird · 18/07/2018 17:27

I didn’t have this until my 20 week appointment. 16 weeks was just blood pressure, pee in a pot and a chat!

SoyDora · 18/07/2018 17:29

In my first pregnancy they didn’t listen to it at all... trust policy. They said it wasn’t a reliable indication of the health of the baby.
In my second they first listened to it at 28 weeks, and I imagine it will be the same this time as they didn’t do it last week (16 week appt) and my next appt isn’t until 28 weeks.

I had my 16 week appointment when I was 14 weeks and they managed to locate DD’s heartbeat 🙃

leighdinglady · 18/07/2018 17:36

My midwife said she didn't usually do it until 20 because it can cause a lot of anxiety if they can't find it at 16. I convinced her though Grin

SoyDora · 18/07/2018 17:37

(Meant to say 2 and 3 were in different counties to number 1)

snowy1982 · 18/07/2018 18:04

In my area it’s 25 weeks before they start listening

Thegirlhasnoname · 18/07/2018 18:15

My midwife listened for the babies heartbeat for the first time on Monday (25 week appointment)

Havetothink · 18/07/2018 18:21

I was told they don't normally check at 16 weeks In case they can't find it.

SoyDora · 18/07/2018 19:09

Am I the only one who didn’t have a 25 week appt? Is it because it’s my third? I had an appt last week at 16 weeks and my next is 28 weeks.

BlueBug45 · 18/07/2018 19:15

Mine was at around 22 weeks. Even then I only have one measurement written down. The rest of the time they listen and don't record the number.

@SoyDora very likely. I do have a schedule of when to make appointments for low risk births for first and subsequent births in my notes, and the number of appointments more than halves for subsequent births. (Though you should have still had a scan at 20 weeks.)

SoyDora · 18/07/2018 19:19

Yes I have the 20 week scan, just not seeing the midwife at the surgery until 28 weeks. I’m fine with it, I have no desire to see them any sooner, just wondered if it was usual!

hammeringinmyhead · 18/07/2018 19:51

Mine volunteered to do it but did warn me not to panic if she couldn't find it. As soon as she touched the wand to my belly it came through. I was 16 weeks to the day.

Armygirl · 18/07/2018 19:52

It seems it varies between areas and trusts then. This is my 4th but it’s been 7 years since I was last pregnant and I couldn’t remember.
soydora my next one after this is at 28 weeks as I was told it’s just First pregnancies that have more appointments

28 weeks and my midwife has never listened to the heartbeat, never mentioned it. Suspect they don't do it in my trust.

Nolagerformethanks · 18/07/2018 21:25

I had my 16 week check yesterday, the midwife did find the heartbeat for me, it was lovely!very wriggly baby just like 12 week scan Grin I'm in north east!

Thetimehascometo · 18/07/2018 21:28

I just remembered when I went for my consultants appointment at 18 weeks the midwife tried to find the heartbeat and couldn't, so had to get another midwife in... pretty scary considering how easily it had been located at 14 weeks, sort of wished she hadn't bothered!

Hjkillas · 18/07/2018 21:39

Mine did at 16 wks. Just ask her to she probably will. I love listening every appointment x
