20 week scan - large tummy!

Hi, new to here and expecting my first in November.
Had my 20 week scan this week and my baby has an incredibly large belly - as in, it's off the chart at the moment.
The sonographer suggested "we might want to talk to the midwife about a possible glucose test to rule out gestational diabetes" but it was said in a fly away comment.
Anyway, we then went to see the midwives, who didn't seem concerned and said a glucose test can't be done until 28 weeks which is 8 weeks away!
Any cause for me to be concerned? I admit I've been craving sweet things like chocolate and having a lot of fruit. I'm worried now I've made my baby fat, my husband says not to worry but it's hard!

My baby’s tummy was measuring off the chart too at 20 weeks. At 35 weeks he was measuring way way off, an estimated 8lb 3oz with at least 5 weeks to go. He was born at 39 weeks at 8lb 3oz 🙄 They might get you in for a GTT just to make sure or they might want to scan you again a bit later on but as long as you’re feeling well I’m sure everything is fine. Have a look at the symptoms of GD and if you feel like you need to be seen, make sure you’re seen

The midwives aren't telling you the entire truth as a diabetes test can be done at 24 weeks at the earliest.

Do you have known risk factors for GD e.g. BMI over 30, family history of diabetes, ethnic origin?

My mum is of oriental origin and had GD when she was pregnant with me. I feel absolutely fine, in fact unless I look in the mirror or baby kicks, I don't feel pregnant at all.
The midwives didn't seem bothered at all and no appointments made until my next one in 8 weeks time.

I had a glucose tolerance test at 16 weeks in this pregnancy.

You can have the gtt earlier. I am having mine done at 16 weeks too.

I had my GTT test at 24 weeks and was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Like you my mam had gd and that was the only reason i was tested. I also felt absolutely fine so was surprised when i got the diagnosis.

There was a woman at my diabetes clinic that was tested at 12 weeks because she had gd in a previous pregnancy. So they can definitely test earlier if they want.

I think you should push for the test if you can. Untreated gestational diabetes can lead to big babies, placenta failure and still birth. Please dont let that panic you, that is worse case scenario and very rare. Im only pointing it out so you know how serious it can be if not managed properly. Im surprised your midwife is so blaze about it tbh

My 28 week growth scan showed my little boy had a huge tummy, and short legs!!
He was born at 37+5 with a normal sized tummy and long legs!!!
Don’t panic, you can get the gtt but until you know for certain try not to worry. Scans can be inaccurate.
