Leaky heart valve

Hi... Had 12 week scan a week or so ago and been trying not to google or ask on here but can't get it out of my mind. At scan I was 13+2 and was told everything was looking great... Except a small leak in one of babies heart valves. They said it could be one of three things - 1. A sign of a chromosome issue but that it wouldd be highly unlikely as combined tests came out extremely low, 2. A sign of a heart defect 3. Nothing and by 20 week scan will have cleared up. They said option 3 is most likely and 95% of babies seen with this at 12 week scan have it all cleared by 20 weeks. Just wanted to see if anyone else had been in a similar situation? Thanks

It sounds very worrying, but if it helps at all I was the baby between option 2 and 3 but everything turned out fine. Just regular checks until I was 4 years old. Hopefully your next scan will give some reassurance

Thanks so much for your reply. And glad to hear you are fit and well now! I'm trying not to worry too much... I'm pretty sure it's not option 1 (chromosome issue) as I can't remember exact odds but it was very very low. Midwife said you can't really get much lower which was a relief as I am 35 year old. I am really hoping by next scan it will all have cleared up and fixed itself. Anyone else got any experience of this? Also, at 16 week midwife appointment does the midwife listen to heartbeat? Is it more likely than not she will be able to find it? I have heard at 16 weeks it can sometimes still be difficult to find heartbeat. I think it would give me a bit more reassurance if I could hear heartbeat again

My ds2 had leaky heart valves and kidney valves at 20 week scan. We got extra scans and saw consultants before he was born (they were fairly sure it wasn't chromosomal after 3 different scans at 20w). Consultants were great. When he was born we had one urine infection but the valves self-corrected. Heart murmur continues but is benign. He is a very healthy and outgoing 4yo now. It was an added worry before he was born, but reassuring as very closely monitored. From what we were told these things normally sort themselves out but that they would rather know in advance and then not be needed than be caught out with a newborn getting ill being the first they knew.

Thanks that's really reassuring. Glad to hear your son is doing well. We have a special cardiac scan on top of anomaly scan. I so hope it turns out to be nothing!

My test results were trisomy 21 1:5956 and 13/18 1:11359. Those seem good odds to me that it's not chromosomal do u think? Although I guess baby could the 1. Fingers and toes crossed

Got everything crossed for you too. Those odds sound like there's unlikely to be anything to worry about. I know it's really hard, but try not to worry, your little one has 28 weeks to strengthen up its valves. Sending you lots of hugs.

Hi there, very old post but I’ve just been told the same and wondered how it all worked out for you @SophieStripe

Mabelledox · 01/01/2023 15:44

@Seasidechick164 @SophieStripe I just found out the same news about the leaky valve at my 12 week private scan but have been given very low odds of anything chromosomal. Hoping it does resolve by 20 weeks, did you both have positive outcomes?

Hey guys,

If it helps. I was number 2. I was born with a congenital heart defect - two holes in my heart. As was my brother. His repaired by itself he's never had any appointments or issues for it.

I had open heart surgery at 1 month - risk was fairly low. Been fine since living a normal life. Have check ups every two years but that's about it. I'm now pregnant with my first child and everything going well - low chances of passing it on 😊

Bare in mind that it was 28 years ago now so science has changed even more and most things can be done keyhole.

@Mabelledox my son has a leaking heart valve and he’s fine he will need surgery to replace the valve when he’s around 15, he’s now 13, so not too long away, it doesn’t seam to effect his day to day life. It wasn’t picked up in pregnancy it was when he was 5 and collapsed for another reason while at school and was rushed to hospital. My other son is 6 and he’s had 3 open heart surgeries, he was born with many defects

@SophieStripe @Seasidechick164 @Mabelledox hi, we have just had this news too. I wondered how it worked out for you? Thanks
