Stupid question ... about small baby

Is there anything you can do to help a small baby grow inside? Like if I just start eating loads will it go to baby? Or is it just one of those out of your control things?

Looks like this is you and me both... I asked this yesterday and got nothing back from the doctor who said ‘Well you aren’t malnourished so...’ I’m back again tomorrow for a growth scan if I get any information I will let you know. I guess somebody’s baby has to be small, looks like it’s us!

Yea let me know how you get on. How many weeks are you? Im thinking if I just eat loads then maybe baby will have a growth spurt 😂

It's really one of those out of your control things as far as I know.
They always say baby takes whatever it needs no matter what you eat (and I had twins who were 6lb each, and I threw up every thing I ate for the entire pregnancy).
However, extra cake never goes amiss, so go for it Grin

I was advised to eat healthily when my baby was small. She was actually diagnosed as IUGR so it was far beyond just being small. I was given steroid injections to prepare for an early delivery. She did some catching up.

They will monitor you with extra growth scans and fetal heart monitoring. I was having two sessions per day on the monitor and two scans a week towards the end due to the other complications. It seems easy to say but try not to worry. Somebody’s baby is on the first centile or it wouldn’t be there.

I think it depends on your placenta. I had a very large baby and a massive placenta. The midwives were raving about how healthy and beautiful it was! Of all the things.

Hi, i had twins who had SIUGR, and did a lot of research re growth. The general consensus was increasing protein, though I will stress this was mainly from American websites and not the NHS, but as my babies were poorly I was desperate to do anything. I dramatically increased my protein intake, I did put a hell of a lot of weight on but my babies grew too and the biggest was 4lb at only 32 weeks which was a fab weight. Good luck x

Dd was only 4lb 15oz at 38 weeks she was tiny but all In proportions tiny baby clothes were too big st first. But once she was born she caught up very quick think she but on bout 10oz in a week a few times. Ds was bigger 6lb 7oz but still not huge and when he was weighed at home by nidewives he had actually put weight on rather than loose anything like they expect. 😳 I wouldn’t worry to much if they just seem small and you will be scheduled to have growth scans it’s if they appear to stop growing that’s an issue

I had bad hyperemesis throughout with my 3 so didn't keep much down/what I did keep down wasn't very varied.

I lost weight into underweight BMI during each pregnancy but babies were all around average sizes for the gestations they were born at.
I was told throughout that the baby takes what it needs first so I think they will grow however they're going to fairly independently of what you are eating.

Thanks all. Yea it is my placenta thats pretty rubbish. Getting growth scans regularly so will just see what happens.

@NelleB how was today?

I had a scan for liquid and placenta and it was perfect! They couldn’t do any growth as I was under the 14 day count by 24 hours so I’m back in Thursday. My close friend is due a week before me and she’s also been told today her baby is small. I’m starting to doubt things as how can two woman so close in friendship and due date both be having small babies even though both had a healthy BMI to begin with, are not malnourished and are professional women who took all the prenatals and tried to conceive for a while. Both of us also suffered a pregnancy loss last year but that’s regardless. My friend has also been on 2 weeks bed rest. I don’t feel like we can win. X

No way. Glad everything is ok though and 🤞 for thursday. I had a similar experience last time. My close friend was a week behind me, same size bumps and she was measuring small and i was measuring big! Hers was born 2 days after mine at 5lb something and mine was 8lb 3oz. So many people get monitoring for growth be it big or small. Hopefully all works out well for us this timw round!
