Bumpy Cycle Commute in First Trimester

Hi,

Just needing a bit of advice. I'm 5 weeks pregnant. Only found out 2 days ago. I commute to work 12 miles by bike (24 miles round trip). I go via the Edinburgh Union canal. I was hoping to keep on cycling for as long as my body would allow (probably 2nd trimester). Just need to make sure I don't push myself too hard on the route. However, the route is a little bumpy in places due to protruding tree roots and uneven surfaces. I'm not too worried about falling off as I'm very familiar with the paths. However, is it safe for me to repeatedly go over bumps? Anyone else cycled whilst pregnant? Sorry, if this seems like a stupid question.

Grin Yes it will be fine. Especially in the first trimester - I should think it would be uncomfortable towards the end.

I am 20 weeks and cycle to work daily - about 4 miles each way. I did worry about the bumping a bit in the first trimester but I don’t think it does any harm. If I know I’m coming to a bumpy bit of road I just stand up slightly on the pedals and use my legs to cushion it if you see what I mean.

I have found the cycling brilliant for keeping active and fit and intend to keep going as long as I can get on and off the bike!

Thanks :) this is really comforting to know. I'd hate to have to give up cycling. So much better than being crammed in with other commuters.

It will be fine! Keep going as long as you feel comfortable doing so.

Carry on. Your body’s used to it. I had a few drops of blood but it wasn’t from the womb, just a bit of erosion when the inside wall moves outwards.
