slightly big bladder?

Hi all,

We went to the 12 week scan and everything looked normal, until they said the babies bladder was 7mm, which is the highest for normal- start for not normal. Had an intense scan with a specialist and she said just to take the blood test to check for chromosomes but she doesn't seem to think anything is too wrong. The blood tests came back negative.

Had a 17 week scan today to check up and the babies bladder is 7mm, but this scanner, was encouraging us to take the amino-needle chromosome test. Even though there are no other problems?

We have decided not to take the test as there is a small chance of miscarriage and I know I would be devastated if I caused that miscarriage.

So confused what to think?

My situation was almost the opposite! I had my 20 week scan and no bladder was seen. I had a further 5 scans where no bladder was seen and we were given a diagnosis and offered an amniocentesis. I had a couple of weeks to think about in and during that time personally decided I wouldn’t have one. At the next appointment where I could have had the amnio the bladder was seen, and the baby was confirmed to look completely healthy.

I’m sorry for what you’re going through as it is so stressful. My baby’s bladder seemed to be slow to develop, perhaps yours is just a bit ahead.

At 28 weeks we were told our baby has a slightly larger tube from kidney to bladder. Not the same condition, but like you there was lots of whispering about how it could be a soft marker for downs or a chromosomal problem.

Are you generally low risk for downs and other conditions? If so, and there are no other problems, then I can see why you’d be reluctant to take the test. It’s worth remembering that there’s a lower risk of miscarriage in the second trimester when having the test done. If you still feel nervous, are there options such as the harmony test? I think you’d have to go private for that one.
