Could the baby still have downs if the fluid reading is good?

Had my scan and the fluid measured 1.7 on the back of the neck. I know the downs results checks lots of things but dies that reading mean we are more than likely ok?

Unless you have more testing no one can tell you definitively until your child is born.

Have you had the combined screening? Aka bloods aswell, I'm sure everything is absolutely fine, I totally understand your worry, I didn't even get the fluid checked as I didn't find out I was preggo till 20weeks! Just had the bloods, odds of 1in 16000, baby is now 11weeks and absolutely fine. I'd defo recommend getting the combined screening though just to put your mind at rest x

And exactly what the other poster has said, unfortunately nothing is definitive x

Unfortunately it really is all odds based on others. So you may be 1: 1600 risk of having a baby with DS. You can end up being the one. My sister was told she was low risk following a blood test and ended up with a baby with DS. There are a number of markers however and things have improved over the years. Scan can reveal issues in the heart which are indicative of a chromosomal disorder. The harmony blood tests gives you around a 99% risk of the main chromosomal disorders. I was 1:4 risk of having a baby with DS with my last and this risk was based on my age, previous issues, blood test and scan. My DS is perfect. Nothing is a 100% accurate but a good gynae team will be able to identify issues early and do the necessary screening.

Sorry typo! Should have read the harmony test is 99% accurate at identifying chromosomal disorders

I'd just like to gently suggest that a baby with Downs' Syndrome can be 'perfect' too.

rogueone · 10/07/2018 22:03

Smellyjo very true and I met someone in hospital who went round showing everyone her little girl who she chose to have knowing she had DS. However my sisters little boy ended up having major heart surgery at 6 weeks and further surgery thereafter. He has a lot of issues and she will be his career for life. It’s a massive life decision to have a baby but to be then told your baby has DS or another issue is something that requires a lot of thought too as the impact is unknown. People have to make there own decisions a and choices and I wouldn’t judge either way.

Carer sorry typo
