I like Catriona. We had Catrinel on the shortlist for DD. This is the Romanian diminutive for Ecaterina (Catherine), I think.

nappyaddict · 31/05/2007 21:14

i wasnt sure if it was cat - ree - oh - nah or cat - ree - on - ah.

macmama73 · 31/05/2007 22:16

We pronounce Cat-Ree-Oh-Na as well. We live in Germany and to pronounce it the "Scottish" way, Ca-Tree-Na would be too confusing for the Germans! If I shorten her name then I call her Cat, which suits her as she climbs like one.
We found it difficult to find names that worked in German and in English, no names with -th for example, Nathan doesn't sound too nice with a German accent. Nae-zan. Eek!

cookieMOMster · 01/06/2007 00:30

Linja Dorothee
(Linja being the modern version of the Swedish Linnéa (a flower) and
Dorothee the German version of Dorothy - God's gift - and my late Ma's name)
Hi McMama, hope you are doing fine (sorry for the hijack!!)

Bouquetsofdynomite · 01/06/2007 09:05

Tasja, sorry but the pedant in me feels compelled to point out that using Il in a girl's name is just plain wrong.
Other elemental names: Stella / Estrella (star), Soleil for a girl (pron 'soleyee' =sun), Sol for a boy, Celeste, Nina (pron Ninya = a Pacific weather phenomenon that means 'cheeky girl'!), Astrid?

emalushka · 01/06/2007 09:38

What do you think of Dougie (Douglas)? I won't be offended...

Tinasan · 01/06/2007 10:07

Nappyaddict - it's pronounced 'Catreena' or 'Katrina' as in Katrina & the waves...Macmamma, I'm often called Cat too, it avoids any problems!

TheodoresMummy · 02/06/2007 08:56

Nappyaddict - any names you don't like ??? (kidding - obviously don't say if there are .

DS is Theodore, we mostly call him Theo.

I am the opposite to most of you then. I can think of plenty of boys names that I love, but struggle with girls.....

Re 'Scout' - I know this is the book 'To kill a mockingbird', but what's the origin of the name. I do reeeeeally love it, but I would need to convince DH that it is actually a name IYKWIM.

fillyjonk · 02/06/2007 09:09

i am realising that i don't like ANY boys names

i don't like "modern" names

all "old fashioned" names have connotations. OR they are one of the dc's good friends names or whatever.

the only name that i quite like is actually my brother's name, so need to think on that
