I've had 6 mc and I'm pregnant again around 7-8 weeks. I have a reasurance scan on Wednesday but I am so scared of having a internal scan. I was told by the doctor to stop having sex as during my other pregnancies I had sex regularly and there unsure if that is what's cause me to mc? So I'm now scared of having a scan incase it causes me to mc? Since having no sex I have carried this baby longer then the previous ones?
And also after having a scan few years back I was in pain afterward and about a week later I miscarried? What to do? X

Tell them at your scan that it has to be abdominal only. If they can’t see anything, then they can’t see anything. That’s a smaller risk to take than putting your pregnancy at risk.

They absolutely cannot force you to have an internal that you don’t consent to.

Fingers crossed for a healthy pregnancy x

Don't have one. It is your decision.

ParisNext · 08/07/2018 20:28

You absolutely don't have to have an internal scan and in your position I wouldn't. Why risk it? If you're pregnant then you're pregnant. Ots very important to stand firm even if you're made out to be paranoid! Your body your choice.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 08/07/2018 21:04

I absolutely agree that it's your choice and you don't have to have one if you don't want to - but I just also wanted to reassure you that there is no evidence an internal scan causes miscarriage, and it's almost certainly a sad coincidence that you lost one of your pregnancies after one. I'm really surprised a doctor said that to you about sex - do you have a known issue with your cervix? If not (and if you do then you should make sure that this is known to the sonographer as then they will make sure to only do an abdominal scan) then there is no evidence that sex would have caused your miscarriages and I think that was a horrible thing to say, as it's obviously made you worried that it was your own fault.

PotteringAlong · 08/07/2018 21:06

Then don’t have one?

Darkstar4855 · 08/07/2018 21:28

There is absolutely no evidence to suggest a risk of miscarriage from having an internal scan. Please don’t be worried - the probe is small and they are very gentle. At 7-8 weeks you may well not need one anyway as they may be able to see all they need to with an abdominal scan.

If you really don’t want one then of course you can decline it - they will just do the best they can with an abdominal scan instead.

Celebelly · 08/07/2018 21:29

Just say you don't want one. You shouldn't need one at that gestation anyway if it's just to check the basics. I had one at 6+3 and it was abdominal and it showed baby in the right place, measuring well with a heartbeat. Just go with a nice full bladder.

tenbob · 08/07/2018 21:33

Obviously you don't have to have an internal scan but there is absolutely no evidence to suggest an internal would pose any MC risk

Bluebellysmell · 08/07/2018 21:54

OP you don't need to have anythin g done you are uncomfortable with or unsure about.

If it offers some reassurance remember that these scans are used a lot for reassurance of women who have multiple mc or who are high risk, they wouldn't do that if they increased the risk of loss.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 08/07/2018 21:57

You shouldn't need one at that gestation anyway if it's just to check the basics. I had one at 6+3 and it was abdominal and it showed baby in the right place, measuring well with a heartbeat.

When I had a scan at 6+3 the abdominal showed a gestational sac of the right size (which obviously was a good indication) but I needed an internal to see the actual foetus and a heartbeat. I don't think it's unusual to not be able to see much abdominally until later on, so while OP might be able to see this at 7-8 weeks if she opts for abdominal only she shouldn't panic at all if she can't.

Lotsofdigestives · 08/07/2018 21:58

Obviously don’t have one if you don’t want to, but I wanted to say I’ve had a fair few and it’s not painful; the probe doesn’t go ‘in in’ and I’ve never had any pain.

DancingLedge · 08/07/2018 22:01

It's your pregnancy: you don't have to agree to anything that you feel unsure about, including any type of scan, at any stage .

This must be such an anxious time for you; warmest best wishes for everything working out.

Mousefunky · 08/07/2018 22:32

Abdominal didn’t show anything for me at 6 or 7 weeks and those were private scans. I had a dating scan at 8+5 with my DC2 and that showed everything abdominally.

I wouldn’t expect to see much abdominally at 7 weeks and if you don’t opt for the internal, you’ll surely go away feeling even more worried? Internal scans don’t cause miscarriage.

Merrydoula · 09/07/2018 07:53

I wouldn't have an internal scan at this early stage. Tell them you only wish to have an abdominal, at 5 weeks I had abdominal and they could see sac, and I have plenty of belly fat!

Hope it all goes well :)

Greenwomanofmay · 09/07/2018 08:03

I had an internal scan at 6 weeks for bleeding and it was fine. As others have said it didn’t go in far and the midwife sonographer was very gentle. I saw the heart beat. Sex is a lot more vigorous.

Relaxdontdoit · 09/07/2018 08:06

Thank you all for your replies.
I have a miscarriage Clinic appointment tomorrow as they said I might have to go on asprin. I will mention it to them about it. I am petrified of having a miscarriage again,! X

I’ve had 3 early miscarriages and have a short, damaged cervix. I’ve had multiple internal scans this pregnancy so far and have made it to 16 weeks. There’s no evidence that sex in the first trimester causes miscarriages, but given my history I did avoid it too.

bunnyrabbit93 · 09/07/2018 08:22

You don't have to have one maybe just wait until you can have a external one. With DD2 I was out on aspirin but for placenta abruption i believe it helped. Hope it all goes well Thanks

SoyDora · 09/07/2018 10:53

I had a normal abdominal scan at 7+4 in this pregnancy and they could see everything they needed to see.
