Hi! I'm Gem. Just found out we are expecting our 1st baby this week. Probably about 6 weeks gone. We're really please about the news, but I am sometimes feeling a bit lost about what to expect and what I am supposed to be doing. It all feels like a long way off as baby would be due in January. Even 12 weeks scan seems miles away right now. We've only told very close friends and family because I understand that this is a critical time until 12 weeks. Any one else have any similar thoughts and can any more experienced mums give us some advice? Thanks! Love Gem.xXx : )

Gem - congratulations!! If you look in the ante-natal threads section, there will be a due in January thread which you would be very welcome to join. MNers got me through my first pregnancy (and beyond!)

Have you been to see your GP yet?

Gemtubbs · 27/05/2007 12:40

Hello beansprout! Love the name!

Thanks for talking to me. I saw the GP the day I got the positive result and she was very nice and she told me about avoiding certain cheeses, pates and seafood. I'm vegetarian so most of it is not really applicable. I've been trying to eat well since we've found out and I'm enjoying the idea of a baby being on the way! I ate raw carrot yesterday, which I normally hate! I will check out the ante-natal section, I'm sure it will be great and be really useful.

Seeing the midwife in about 2 weeks as instructed by my GP so I'm hoping all will be well.

So how long have u been a mum? How did your pregnancy go?

Thanks!

Love Gem.xXx

How exciting for you Gemtubbs! Hope you have a great pregnancy, and get yourself onto the ante-natal club for January (am on the June one and we've had a secret shower present exchange which was fab!)

There's lots of advice and support on Mumsnet (lots of disagreements too!) but is generally a very positive place to air your worries and find others in similar situations.

Personally I'm an old hand, cooking number 4 and putting off any interaction with my other 3 by being on here.

Good luck xx

Hi Gem,
and congratulations!! I know exactly what you are going through at the moment....I'm a first-timer too (17 weeks now), and I didn't (or better: still don't) know what to expect!! Just take it slowly, week by week... I was sooo impatient in the beginning and couldn't wait for the 12 week scan!! Just get lots of books on pregnancy and keep surfing mumsnet - it helps!! Right now I'm getting extremely impatient about my 20 week scan, which of course is still AGES away... as you can see, there will always be something exciting/scary/new on the way....just try to enjoy the first trimester, and take it very easy!!

Go to the "week by week" section on the following website:

www.i-am-pregnant.com

it is great and tells you how your little buba is growing each week.

All the best xxxx

click here for the Due In January Ante-Natal Group

they really are a wonderful support during pg and after (i'm on the April p/n thread)

beansprout · 29/05/2007 18:02

Hi Gem, how are you today?

Ds is now 2.7yo and the pregancy was very straightforward, no problems at all! I had a huge amount of support from my (then) ante-natal thread. Not sure what I would have done without it. No-one else, other than an equally pregnant mum to be, could possibly be interested in the detail of another woman's pregancy!!

Hope you are finding what you need on MN

Hi Gem,
I'm on the jan thread and this is my first too. I am a little bit ahead of you - will be 9 weeks on thursday.
These early weeks seem to be passing slowly and I keep wishing them by as I want to stop feeling nauseous, be reassured that the bean is less at risk after then, and tell my friends.
Lots of us on the jan thread, so come and join.

I kept my first pregnancy very quiet for a long time, although it seems like half the workforce of my partner's employer learned about it very quickly indeed. I told dp and mum almost immediately I realised (5/6 weeks), union convenor at 9 weeks (before holiday and after a rather worrying announcement of further dramatic restructures at work), line manager with permission to tell certain other named individuals who needed to know. Then I told my boss's boss's secretary, and said I would give her permission to gossip at the right time (I told her she could let others know at about 5 months!) Because I barely showed until very late in pregnancy, I was able to pretty much choose who I wanted to tell and when.

But I was helped in this by very supportive partner and mother as well as by mumsnet. Whether or not you have other support, I have to echo everyone who recommends joining the antenatal thread for your due month, I found mumsnet v helpful early on and then dropped out, but was made welcome in my last weeks of waiting for baby to arrive, and don't know what I would have done without it during those horrible slow days, or now as I adjust to the shock of first time parenthood.

I was also on the April 2007 antenatal thread, though baby didn't arrive until May.

Whatever you worry about or experience, you'll find people on mumsnet who've been there and that really does make a difference.

Hope all goes well for you, take care, hope to see you around on the forums.
