Choosing the sex of your baby

Just came across a website called planbaby.com it claims it can help you find out the most likely times when you can conceive a boy or a girl or if you are already pregnant what you are going to have if you know the dates you had sex. Probably a lot of rubbish but thought I would share it with you!

Good fun, just been recommended a site which claims to predict the sex of a child using the age of the mum and the month of conception, its...

mypage.direct.ca/j/jfeng/gender.htm

I can't be sure of the month of conception for my first so can't check it - but it reckons I'm having a boy this time! can anyone backfit their children?

Paula1 · 29/08/2001 10:07

Lil, said I was supposed to have a girl - but I didn't!!

Azzie · 29/08/2001 15:32

During my first pregnancy I really didn't want to have a daughter (don't really know why, personal unresolved issues about sex discrimination maybe) so when my first child was a boy I was secretly very relieved (there, I've finally admitted it!). However, when it came to pregnancy number 2 I didn't mind what I had (I think I'd learnt that babies aren't boys or girls, they're individual people). My husband and I were convinced the baby was a boy - when the midwife pulled her out and said 'It's a girl' we looked at one another in amazement and both thought the same thing: 'What on earth do we do with one of these then?'! Two years down the line I love having one of each, but it really wouldn't have mattered what sex they were in the end. After all, they're all lovely, and whether boy or girl inthe end they don't turn out at all like you were expecting anyway!

lil, i saw this chart in a parenting mag years ago - i assume it's the same one, it's chinese - and backfitted all 4 of mine. (fortunately the ones where i couldn't be sure of the month had the same sex for both.)

however when i tried to use what i remembered of it for a friend's baby it was wrong - but then maybe i remembered it wrong!

Janh · 29/08/2001 16:16

lil - i wrote the previous message without looking at your chart - it's different! and i don't think it backfits ANY of mine - isn't that weird?

i can't remember which mag the other one was in but it was the feb 88 edition - mother and baby or practical parenting or something...it came with the same description of being buried in a tomb for 100s of years!!! what was memorable was that it predicted a girl for almost every month when the mother was between 30 and 32...

Robbie · 29/08/2001 20:55

Lil,
Just tried it and it said I would have a boy - I got 2 girls!

Minx · 05/09/2001 00:48

I've just done it. 100% wrong as well.

Nmd · 05/09/2001 18:17

I've just done it - first one right, second one wrong

Tried it. 100% right. My first child was a son -correct. Then I had girl twins, and it said female...not so hot when it comes to predicting mixed gender multiples tho'!

Chairmum · 06/09/2001 01:02

I've just tried it and all four of mine are correct!!!! How weird is that?

Hmonty · 06/09/2001 15:02

Looks like I'm on for a third boy then....Well we'll see in 6 months time!

Mima · 06/09/2001 20:12

My first one was right as it predicted a boy. My second should be a girl. Will find out in December.

Just done mine, also right, had a son.

Lizzer · 08/09/2001 17:23

Okay, I was wondering how you work out when you conceived. My last period was on March 5th '99 and I have a 30-35ish day cycle so how do I know when it was from that? It's annoying because for March it's a boy and april a girl - she's a girl so could that be possibly right? Any clue anyone?!! I really love stuff like this

Joe · 09/09/2001 14:57

Hi Lizzer, back from more travels. I just worked mine out as you would work out the due date, maybe I did it wrong.

Janh · 09/09/2001 16:49

lizzer, with a 30-35 day cycle, for ovulation you would count forward about 16-21 days (30-35 take away 14, as from what i understand the length of time from ovulation to next period IS standard, 14 days, whatever length the whole cycle is...) - making ovulation around march 21st-26th.

but the egg is available for fertilisation for 48 hours, i think (haven't looked this stuff up recently!) so you could stretch it to march 28th-29th. i really don't think you could make it into april - unless you happened to have an even longer than usual cycle that month...!

i haven't explained it very well, sorry, a chart would be clearer!

Lizzer · 10/09/2001 12:05

Thanks for that Janh, I understood what you wrote perfectly. So I guess the chart was wrong for me then.....

spidermum · 04/02/2005 22:12

just stumbled on this old thread. Did anyone follow Heidi's method? My dd would love a sister....

bonym · 05/02/2005 18:44

We used the method _ i had been charting my cycle for about 8mths before we decided to "go for it" - the first couple of months we weren't successful as we timed intercourse too far ahead of ovulation. The third month we did it 2 days before and conceived! The 20 week scan confirmed we were having a girl (well 90% certain anyway!) so, yes, it worked for us!
