Empty sac

So I've been having sharp stabbing pains for the last week and last night they became unbearable so my gp booked me in for an early scan this morning. I've dated myself at around 7 and a half weeks pregnant (going by the date of my last period) well I arrived for my scan to be told that I'm only dating at 4 weeks now I know I physically couldn't have conceived 4 weeks ago we didn't have sex! Also I was getting positive pregnancy tests 4 weeks ago... anyway she located the sac which I could clearly see but it was empty so I'm feeling really confused! I've got another appointment in 2 weeks time but I can't spend 2 weeks not knowing what's going on! Has anyone else experienced this and what was the outcome? In my personal opinion I'd say maybe the foetus stopped growing at 4 weeks but I'm not a nurse and surely I'd have miscarried by now?! She didn't say much just that she'll see me in two weeks and we'll know more then but I can't get it out of my head!

It’s possible it’s just too small to be detected right now. Another 2 weeks may allow it some extra time to grow or not.

I had the same thing when I thought I was around 6 weeks pregnant. She's a healthy 5yo now. The trouble with early scans is they are not reliable - it can just be too early to tell. Unfortunately all you can do is sit out the two weeks when the result is likely to be clearer either way. Fingers crossed for you.

Unfortunately it could be a missed miscarriage, your body can carry a foetus that has stopped growing for ages before you start to miscarry. I went for a scan expecting to be 9 weeks but looked like 5 with no heartbeat. Went back two weeks later and no change, and no sign of miscarrying naturally, I had to have medical management to force my body is miscarry.

It could go both ways really. I was sure straight away that something wasn't right because I was very certain of my dates. If your dates could be slightly out then you may just not be as far along as you thought you were and you might go back to see a healthy baby.

The waiting two weeks to get answers is horrendous Thanks

I had a similar thing happen. My dates were all over the place because I had been on the pill when I conceived but going by when I could remember having sex (I was on heavy medication and spaced out a lot of the time!) I thought I was about 10 weeks.

I went in for my scan all excited and happy only to be told that she could only see the sac and no baby. The person who did the scan was vile.

I saw the consultant and he booked me in for an internal scan the following week. I had a week when I could barely get dressed - this baby was so longed for and conceived against all odds and now apparently was non existent.

I went to the hospital for the internal scan and they located the baby straight away. My dates were so far off there was no way it would have been picked up on an ordinary scan.

My non existent baby is now a young man and getting married in two weeks but I will never forget the pain of being told he wasn't there.

Thankyou all for your replies! The waiting and not knowing Is the hardest part. The person who did my scan wasn't very good either- I already have a 2 year old who I had a scan with when I was 6 weeks pregnant, they did an internal scan almost immediately but this time it wasn't offered. The nurses weren't very informative they just said to come back in 2 weeks but I suppose they're not allowed to speculate are they it's driving me mad!

I had an early scan at what & thought was 7+6 due to pain and spotting. Everything was there but I was only measuring 6+4. Sonographer was honest and said it could go either way. I was convinced I was about to miscarry. Went back two weeks later and all was well and baby had caught up by three days. Good luck..
