20 week scan

I'm quite a worrier and was hoping for some reassurance about the 20 week scan. What kind of things do they look for? If it goes okay then does the baby not have any significant problems or is it just less likely? Hopefully these questions aren't upsetting.

Had mine today. They check heart, bone structure, lips and mouth/nose formation, kidneys, stomach, bowel, brain structures and measurements for HC, AC and femur. As well as fluid volume 👍 they really co cencentrate so they are pretty quiet and its a bit unnerving.

Had mine today too exactly what @venus417 said. It's quite worrying when they're quiet but they're just getting the correct measurements/making sure everything's formed properly etc. Smile

Thank you! It's all such a worry isn't it?

It really is Sad best of luck to you

Mine showed up a weirdly large abdominal circumference compared to other measurements and I remember feeling really worried about it. Just to say my baby is absolutely fine (in fact more than fine and an entirely gorgeous human). Good luck.

Oh and if your baby won't keep still they take longer. If the baby is in the wrong position they get you to wiggle, and if that doesn't work to go for a wander plus have something sugary then come back. If that doesn't work they will book you in for a week or two time to finish off the measurements they have to take.

I didnt realise they were so important. We don't get offered a 20 week. Just 12, then 32 weeks. I'm a bit annoyed now.

Sorry, didn't mean to derail thread.

Pebbles I don’t think any of our grandmas had any scans, but our mums were just fine. It’s a funny one because scans do give you information, but at 20 weeks I wouldn’t be terminating on the grounds of anything they saw, and I guess any issues that would need specialist care at birth would be picked up on your 32 week scan anyway. Plus some women do choose to refuse scans at all. So I think although that’s unusual I’d try not to worry.

Good point Verbena.
