Dying hair in first trimester

Hi everyone

I'm 6 weeks pregnant and my roots need colouring to hide my greys! I've read the guidance on NHS website and the advice is a bit woolly. I usually use the Clairol nice and easy root touch up but I noticed in the ingredients that there is ammonia and peroxide which many website say should be avoided. What has everyone else done in their first trimester - are there any natural safe alternatives that anyone can recommend for dark brown hair?

Thank you!

I dyed mine, the research has been about insanely high levels of hair dye chemicals that you'd basically have to inject yourself with to cause any problems. If you get the book Expecting Better the info about it is in there Smile

Fab - thanks so much for your response. I will also order that book as I've read about it on a few other threads too - sounds like it would be a really good read!

I've not coloured mine as I feel there's no strong evidence to say its OK. I also don't feel it's possible to not get on my scalp as the advice says.

However, if your dark, the dyes with red tones are apparently worse, much stronger chemicals. So stick to more dull/basic browns. Semi permanent is better. Holland and barratt do a natural hair dye that might be worth a try.

As far as I understand it... they used to think the chemicals were not safe for baby, however now the general consensus is that the baby will be fine, but... a pregnant woman is more likely to react to chemicals she has previously been ok with.

So the danger is to you, not the baby. Make sure you patch test well, and try and choose a gentler dye if you can.

They can’t specifically say anything is tested as safe for pregnancy as they cannot test anything on a pregnant woman.

So many different views on this. I don't think anyone will be able to give you a precise answer. I was in the camp of not dying hair in the first 12 weeks but my midwife told me not to at all for the whole 9 months!! I am a worryier so that was it for me, here I am with very faded red hair and grey roots at 21 weeks pregnant! However, I have friends whose midwives have told them it is ok to use hair dye but maybe best after the first 12 weeks. So, lots of conflicting advice, just do whatever you feel comfortable with.

I used nice and easy. No issues.

Unless you inject it or eat it then it won't get anywhere near the baby!
That's what my hairdresser told me! X
