Light brown discharge

Hey everyone,

Recently found out I'm pregnant (5+2) - not planned but happy about it. Over the last few weeks I've drunk and smoked a lot as had a ton of events over the weekends.

Anyway, just went for my 400th wee of the day and have light brown discharge. This is my first so I don't know what to expect, I just know I'm petrified. I have had cramping for the last few days on and off.

Do I need to go to the doctors?

My rational head wants to tell you it can be completely normal, many many women get this and go on to have healthy pregnancies.. the odds are in your favour, etc. Because all that is true.

However, I know all that but I have a scan tomorrow after having some brown spotting (with a slight bit of red spotting in the middle).

And I’ve convinced myself the baby is gone, if not ectopic.

If I could switch my brain off that’d be great.

In all probability you and your baby are perfectly fine, but do mention it to your midwife and get checked out if you want to.

NellyandKelly · 25/06/2018 21:23

Hope it goes well tomorrow! Aren't our brains funny things?! Especially when the hormones take over Blush

I have worried about every little thing... I’ve tried to have a rational word with myself, but honestly... I’m ridiculous.. 🙄

Definitely get checked out if it’ll put your mind at rest, there’s no point in whittling unnecessarily.

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 25/06/2018 21:35

And thank you 🤞

NellyandKelly · 25/06/2018 21:56

I know that feeling! I've had to come off my anxiety medication and go cold turkey on the cigarettes in the last few days - I feel like the anxiety is only going to get worse!

And thanks for the advice x

No medication... but stopped smoking the day I got my BFP. That in itself is fine... but I feel like I have no stress outlet now! x

NellyandKelly · 25/06/2018 22:23

Yeah that's true! My poor DH is my stress outlet now haha! Although he's working away for the week so might explain my pure fear over every little twinge.

Update - it has got a LOT heavier today. A bit like a period flow but brown still. Will the doctors even be able to do or see anything so early? I am so worried

You need to go to EPU and see the nurses there. If you go to A&E if your pregnancy test is positive when they take a sample they will refer you to EPU. I had a small amount of light brown discharge once in my pantyliner and that was the result of a MMC at 8 weeks, so you do need to be seen by someone to find out what's going on. Not sure if Doctor can refer you to EPU because you are so early on doctors class it as a chemical pregnancy/late period. I've had 4 really early losses but all of the early ones resulted in period red fresh blood a few hours later.

NellyandKelly · 26/06/2018 08:44

I've just booked in to see the doctor this morning. Thanks for the advice and sorry for all of your losses Flowers

I've had this with my third and fourth pregnancies. I was referred for an internal scan at 6 weeks with the third and an internal exam to check my cervix was closed. Everything was ok and was told as long as it's brown blood, it's likely to be ok as it's old blood. I bled like this throughout the remainder of that pregnancy but she's a healthy 2 year old now.

With my fourth pregnancy I had it just after my positive test and didn't have a scan till 13 weeks, again all was ok and they just put it down to a bit of implantation bleeding and was treated for thrush too which can cause a light bleed I was told.

NellyandKelly · 26/06/2018 11:14

I have been referred to the EPU, have an appointment on Thursday. I'm hoping it is just implantation bleeding or something - I've read so many positive and negative stories now I just don't know what to expect. Keeping my fingers crossed

Glad Doctors referred you to EPU. You will find out what's going on on Thursday. In the mean time take a pregnancy test, if it's positive then that's a better sign. I only know the worry of all of this too well, but I hope everything goes ok ThursThanks

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 26/06/2018 15:49

I’ve had my scan after brown/red spotting and seen the heartbeat today... it’s not always doom and gloom!

Good luck for Thursday.

NellyandKelly · 26/06/2018 17:43

I'm having a bit of a mare now. Been feeling quite shaky and have this recurring cramp in my lower abdomen that feels like squeezing (how I imagine contractions feel). Seems to be concentrated to my left side too, mostly felt every time I breathe out. I also had my first bowel movement in a while earlier and it was black (TMI I know) but don't know if that's related.

I really don't know if I should be bothering 111 now or just holding out until Thursday! I'm never normally this petrified about everything!

RedWineAllMine · 26/06/2018 17:46

Go to A&E, you pay for it. They will tell you what's going on. Thursday is a while to wait because your mind is all over the place. They will do all checks like they did with me. Have you done another test yet? Bless you

Bishybarnybee · 26/06/2018 17:54

I had this, GP said to prepare ourselves for the worst, went for scan and it was healthy twins. A huge but lovely shock. Can definitely go either way. Everything crossed for a positive outcome for you.

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 26/06/2018 18:01

I also had crampy/ stubby pains with mine... not like period pains or how my previous labours or managed miscarriage felt, I convinced myself it was an ectopic pregnancy.. but all is well.

Go to A&E if you need to.. it’s there.

NotAsGreenAsCabbageLooking · 26/06/2018 18:01

Stabby not stubby...

NellyandKelly · 27/06/2018 02:00

Thanks everyone. Just got back from A&E as the blood got heavier and more blood like in colour. Had serious cramping pains too, so much so I was in tears in the waiting room.

Anyway, 7 hours later and still no answer. Bloods came back fine but can't do a scan until Thursday still, sooo Thursday it is!

huha · 27/06/2018 06:04

Are you having shoulder tip pain too, OP? Or are the pains more centered in your abdomen?

RedWineAllMine · 27/06/2018 07:46

Oh what a mess around. Tomorrow it is. I bet you won't be able to rest until then. Thinking of you.

NellyandKelly · 28/06/2018 14:00

Unfortunately I'm still at the hospital. The scan showed ectopic and I'm booked in for keyhole surgery tomorrow if it doesn't sort itself out by then. Absolutely devastated

Smellyjo · 28/06/2018 14:10

Oh so sorry to hear that news op, that is devastating Flowers
