I have a pet parakeet and am due with my first baby mid August. I'm worried about whether it's ok to have a pet bird and a baby together in the house..? I really love my little birdie, but don't want any harm to come to my baby. I keep him clean, but obviously he still flaps about and I don't want the baby to catch anything.

Didn't someone already do a thread on birds in pregnancy/with babies today? co-incidence!

It should be fine as long as you are vigilant about cleaning up any poo your bird does when he's out of his cage as soon as he does it, and make sure any seeds/small bird foods baby could choke on are regularly hoovered up from around his cage.

I think it's the same with any animal, just common sense and hygiene, and watch baby doesn't hug the bird to death when you aren't looking!

i don't think disease need be an issue- i assume your baby won't be sleeping in it's pooh etc!

i'd only worry about claws + little eyes, but it's your pet, you know how gentle/friendly it is.

I wouldn't worry.. we have 4 rabbits, 2 of which are in the house at the mo, hubby cleans their litter trays, and we love them dearly. Couldn't imagine letting them go as I'm sure baby will love them all dearly too.
