My sis in law is 7 weeks pregnant at the moment. To start with at 5 weeks she was having cramping pains quite bad, bad enough to wake her at night etc but no bleeding. However she was constipated aswell. The pains then went off for about a week and everything was normal, she then had a small bleed last week, about a capfull but no pains at all. Then there was no blood. She's been about 4 days again with everything ok, had her 1st midwife appointment today and got a scan date for just over 3 weeks time making her 11 weeks. However she has had some spotting again this afternoon but still no pains. I am preggers with my 2nd but luckily have had normal pregnancies so I was just wondering if anyone has had similar experiences or any info i could give her?? thanks

does her local hosptial have an Early Pregnancy Unit? I was referred to it at 6 weeks by my GP I had slight bleeding.

She shouldn't have to wait until 12 week scan if she is worried. I would get her to make emergency appoint. with GP and ask to be referred to above.

My SIL is pg and has had 3 pre 12 week scans as she also had bleeding.

I had LOTS of bleeds with both pg (esp my first) and also had cramping pains - both pg ended happily.
If she rings NHS Direct, they should be able to tell her where her nearest EPU is & can refer her - they can do an early scan and check all's well.

You can also self-refer to them, don't need a GP's note (or you don't at the two I went to anyway.

IME, they usually operate on a drop-in basis, usually in the am, so if you go to GP first you just loose a day and spend it worrying

With my first pg, I went in three times, before they told me that the baby was obviously just a PITA and only to come back if I had substantial bleeding - with my second I went twice then went on holiday

Bleeding in early pg is REALLY common, but seeing a little heartbeat really helps calm you down

Wish her good luck from me

thanks foxymagoo, i've just text her to ask, i'm at the same hospital but have never heard of the early pregnancy unit, but i didnt really have any reason to if you see what i mean. It must be so hard for her not knowing, she's had a tough time lately anyway losing her dad v.unexpectantly a few weeks ago so we're all keeping our fingers crossed for this little one.

I just turned up at the hospital near me with the exact same symptoms, cramping and bleeding. If she goes tomorrow during the day, they will probably scan her there and then. It is much quicker than going via GP etc which can take days.
It is very common, as others have said, but best to get it checked to give her some peace of mind.

huskygirl · 23/05/2007 20:31

just found out on net that there is a EPAU at the hospital we're at where she can self refer, it doesnt say what services are provided etc but there is at least a phone number i can give her. i dont know why the midwife didnt tell her this

Huskygirl - sorry to hear about your SIL, bleeding is really scary when you are pg no matter how much there is. Its good that she is not in pain but she should still be checked out. Glad you have got the number for the EPU there, hope she can get a scan very soon. Keep us posted.

Only read OP but I bled/spotted for about 2 weeks between 5-7 weeks pregnant, my gp referred me to the emergency gynae unit at the hospital and they did a scan. Also had small bleed at 16 weeks, went to mw who checked heart beat and all was fine. Think bleeding is quite common in early pregnancy. Do hope your sil is OK, maybe she can manage to get an early scan?

chilledmama · 23/05/2007 21:39

I had some bleeding around 6-7 weeks, was referred to an EPU and was scanned. I saw the heart beat which was lovely: DS now 7 months.

Has she done a pg test to check everything OK...My GP asked if I'd done one when I went in?

Hope everything is OK.
