36 week scan big baby - anyone else?

The estimate from today's scan was that he's 7lb 5oz already at 36 weeks I know these measurements are not very reliable but he's been tracking between 90th and 95th centile for the whole pregnancy.

MW says it's a labour ward birth if 95th centile or above due to the risk of shoulder dystocia (based on this scan he's 93rd). I wanted to go to the same standalone MLU as last time, but not sure if the risk is worth it.

Anybody else on course for a big baby?

I was scanned at 36 weeks with Dc3 and his tummy was so huge the computer could not cope with the calculations and the sonographer had to work out the measurements by hand. He was born at 36 +6 and weighed 8 pounds 10.

But it was a very easy and straightforward labour and really didn't hurt that much at all. He was born at home.

My midwife said its the size of the head that's most important, not the size of tummies because tummies are squishy.

My baby was 4lb12 at 33 weeks, and 6lb3 at 35 weeks but they aren't concerned. They reckon she'll be about 8lb5 by 40 weeks.
Am now 36+1 and not convinced she'll last until 40 weeks anyway, I'm about 10 days ahead on my own dates and I when I've mentioned this recently to midwife/sonographer they have said I could well be right. They've also said that I am all baby and she is so squished up as I'm only small myself which explains why I can't breath half the time!
I guess we'll just have to wait and see on that one though..

At my 36 week scan they said 7lb 5oz too. Consultant worked out that if he carries on track with weight gain then we'll be looking at an almost 10lb baby if he stays in there until 40 weeks.

I'm currently 37 + 3 and I've absolutely had enough. He's so low down that I feel as though he may fall out of my foo at any moment, and I'm in constant pain with SPD. I'd love for him to make an appearance now, if only to save me from forcing out a massively huge baby.... I have real fears that I'll go overdue and he will be 12lb by the time they decide to induce me

My second was estimated to be 7lb 2oz at 35 weeks. He was born at 41w 2d weighing 9lb on the dot. I had a very easy labour and a beautiful water birth, no stitches or anything. It was incredible. Way better than with my first (who was much smaller)! My midwife said that fat babies squish and it's the skinny ones with big heads you need to watch out for

DS tracked in the higher centiles all through my pregnancy and I was told at around 34/35 weeks that he was already about 8lbs so I should expect a 10lb baby.

I went home and cried

He was born at 39wks weighing 7lb half and ounce

I was told that my baby was large and would be 9-10lbs. I had a few growth scans and they all confirmed this.
At 36 weeks I was told she was 7 and a half pounds but when I gave birth at 39 weeks, she was exactly 7lbs and tiny.

Don't worry, the measurements are often wrong. DD1 was estimated to be a pretty average 3.5kg towards the end and was born at 40+5 weighing 2.5kg, so around 5lb11oz.

I had a growth scan at 33 weeks too and they estimated that she is 5lb1oz already and tummy measuring quite big, legs and head measuring correctly though. I know lots of people though who had the same and babies were born at 6 or 7lbs and completely normal size

Theres usually a pound either way when they do them scans.
When i had a scan on my last baby around 30 weeks he was 7 lb 12.
He was born at 8 lb 12 ,2 weeks later.

They're only guidelines and could be way off.

I was on course for a big baby, he was born a week early, 8lb 12. Did have a big head

I had a scan at 35+2 the said he was 6lb 12, waters went same night had him at 35+4 and he was 7lb 1 and small! All through my pregnancy they made out he was this ginormous beast, measuring off the charts but he was tiny just solid. He did have a big belly but I had GD. I wouldn't worry too much. My friend had a baby who was 10lb 5 they also made out she was going to be a huge baby, they induced her at 38 weeks and the baby was tiny, didn't even fit newborn. Depends on the head measurements etc.

I don't know why they've become so obsessed over sizing, i understand they need to pick up any underlying health issues, but I think they've become obsessed with charts and measurements and it causes panic. It doesn't change when they're born either!

Scans seemed quite reliable for mine, DS was scanned at 7lb11 on the morning before he was born at 36 weeks weighing 8lb. The other DS was scanned at almost 8lb at 36 weeks and was 10lb at term +4days.

Both fairly simple births by the way, big doesn't mean tricky birth!

I had growth scans with DS and he was tracking big on all of them. He came at 37+5 and was 9lb 6.5. So he was rather on the large side.

DS1 measured average right through my pregnancy, he was 9lb7
DS2 measured big, he was 8lb3
DC3 is measuring at 85 percentile at 38 weeks, I’m not taking any notice

I was told at 32 weeks baby weighed 5lb already, tummy was measuring big and a high but not abnormally high amount of amniotic fluid. They are not worried yet the consultant said. I have another scan next week at almost 37 weeks. Consultant said the measurements depend on a few things, position the baby is in at each scan, the person doing the scan and working it out and that it isn't always right. I reckon baby will be about 7lb at the next scan if not bigger x

At 36 weeks my little boy was measuring 8lb 10 and he was born at 38+2 weighing 9lb 12 , I was induced as he was a big baby and worried about the shoulders. We ended up having an emergency c-section as his head wasn't coming down! He's now 8 weeks old and as last weighed at 6 weeks and he was 13lb! X

Yeah I was told that-Estimated weight at 36 weeks 7lb 6oz - scared the pants off me as was told she was going to be 10lb!

DD was born at 40 weeks weighing 8lb 3oz

This was 22years ago. I know loads of other mums who were told similar and the predicted weight was very rarely right.

That's about what mine measured at 36 weeks. Imagine my horror as I sailed past my due date and went two weeks over. I repacked my hospital bag with 0-3 month clothes weeping as I took out the beautiful newborn/first size things that would never be worn and at 42+3 was delivered of a bang average 7lb 8oz baby and had to get my mum to bring in some first size clothes!

At 29 weeks (near 3 weeks agi) I measured 4lb 10oz and he's transverse and very long. Expecting a 8lb baby this time round and C section lol

DS weighed an estimated 11lbs at 37 weeks...

He was well ahead of any growth chart from the beginning. Consultant said it was near impossible for him to be truly big as women don’t make babies they can’t birth. Obviously he was wrong, as DS was 11lb 6ozs born at 39 weeks!

I’ve got bags of unworn newborn clothes with tags still on!

Thanks for all the experiences. I do appreciate the scans can be way out. For those who were way out, were you measuring consistently large the whole way along? Or did the extra growth come as a blip?

I hope we all go a little early Star and Rose to save the heads getting any bigger! That sounds promising that your baby is so low already Star.

Just to update: my little guy arrived at 39+0 weighing 8lbs 15oz - even more than had been predicted! I'm glad he's here safely and feeling quite lucky I didn't go overdue.

35 weeks now and little bugger is still transverse and over 7lb but very long- consultant next week and C section getting booked as he us not moving.
